hair falling out, insomnia, weight gain ( even though not really eating)... Wondering if these could be signs of depression..(my son died 8 months of SIDs at 11 days of age) so i know i am still in a grieving process. But I am not taking any medication and my Thyroid has been checked.....

all your answers were wonderful, i am putting it to a vote because i cannot choose.. I have been in an infant loss support group but you can only paritciapte once a year...maybe time to start my own....thank you all for taking the time to answer adn for caring.....

It sounds hormonal. Stress can throw the hormone systems all out of whack, and you are under a doozy of a stress right now.

The #1 hormone - because it can affect the production of all the other hormones - is insulin. Ask your doctor for a fasting insulin blood test . Ask for a copy of your results. 10 or higher is abnormal for an adult.

Also ask for a saliva test. This test will tell you if any of your feminine hormones are not at the best levels.

Your symptoms (all of them) could possibly be related to low blood sugar. They sound quite like mine, the weight gain, the insomnia, the depression. You may want to check out www.hufa.org, and click on the symptoms link to check yourself out.

when you lose someone you love you grieve. When it's a child you have a pain in a corner of your heart forever.

In any stressful situation the first things that are affected are sleep & appetite. It can go one way or the other.

You need a complete physical. Another known fact is that grief takes it's toll on you physically. Any little thing that your body has been keeping in check, goes out of whack.

I speak from experience, I lost my adult son nearly 5 years ago. I suffered from depression, got fibromyaglia and my ulcerative colitis got completely out of control.

I also ran Bereavement groups for 9 years and it's amazing how many people got illnesses, many serious, after losing a loved one. Married couples, often had the spouse die within a year of the other spouses death.

I strongly recommend a Bereavement Group for you. I don't know where you live, but in NJ there's a number 1-800-for-mash that lists all self help groups. I would suggest you call a local hot line or even call the NJ number. I believe there is a National Foundation for SIDs
No one can help you like someone feeling similar pain.

After reading the other answers, I came back to edit mine. First you will NEVER GET BACK TO NORMAL. I would be more concerned about you if you were not depressed. people mean well but basically they do not like to see people sad or know how to deal with it. You really need a bereavement group or counselor. No matter how well meaning, those who have not lost a child cannot relate to your grief. You need to be with people who understand. For ex. I have my son's pictures on the wall, ashes in a self made shrine. I have his drivers licence and some silly things that he held dear..I would never part with them. I think you can understand that. People come to the house and feel uncomfortable with the pictures and especially the ashes -- so they never come back.

yes Honey you are in mourning.. you are not out of it yet.. it takes a few years not months. I am very sorry.. I am a child care giver i raise kids from infants to ?? all ages. lol they all come to me..

Time dose heal the heart not the memories but the heart the feelings will go away.

if your hair is falling out.. and the symptoms you gave this is stage 3 depression.. you need to get help.. this is not a game.. it is your life. God needed your child it is nothing you did... it is nothing you could have stoped.. God needed his child back.. be thank full you got 11days with your child, Behind every tragedy there is a learning a person has to go though to make us stronger..

even i suffer we all have things in are life but when one door shuts many more open it takes time to find the keys but once we do the world is at are hands.

Maby you are to be the women to write all your feeling down in a daily book to help other women go though this.. go to support groups.. if there are none.. then START ONE?? you would be amazed at how little help there really is out in the world..

you can talk all the baby pictures make a calendar or a spiritual inspirational book and start a foundation for your child to help other women in this..

don't just sit there.. Pick yourself up, Take a look at your self. Know that you are the most special women alive for God called on your Child to Come too him because he Needs him to help others.. Angles are made this way.. note: that for every child there is a Angle made.

Let your angle guide you to your Gifts in life. Open your ears and Eyes. and see the real you inside. The more you hurt the more your child will hurt.. The more you love the greater your child becomes.. Love your child my dear.. with all your heart and Soul.. Honer your child's memory..

We all love you every one in the world, even if you don't know us we are with you.. the more prays you do for your child the more..

maybe God needed to fix what was wrong in your child and when you go to have another child his soul will be in the reborn again child.. God dose this.. sometimes mistakes happen.. So get prepared you will have your son back again so just be ready this time.. learn all you can about parent hood and about life and make yourself strong for you child..

I am so sorry for your loss.

Insomnia and weight gain are absolutely common with depression. The hair falling out is the only one that's questionable. Often, after giving birth a woman's hair falls out at a greater rate (because it was not falling out as much during pregnancy). Also, some people who are going through such overwhelming stress might play with there hair as a self-comfort technique, and this might cause ot to fall out.

Please seek out some counseling to help you through this most difficult situation. As much as you are hurting right now, in time you will learn to cope, and the day will come when you can smile again. You will never forget or stop loving your son; but you will learn to make the most of the gift of life that your parents gave you. Hang in there!

I am so sorry for what you are going through--I cannot imagine!! I'm assuming by 'depression' you mean clinical depression. The important thing to remember about clinical depression is that is a chemical imbalance and isn't situational. If you feel all this is a result of your grieving, it is probably not depression the way you think of it. I would strongly recommend that you attend some kind of counseling if you aren't already. It can be a sign of depression.
The loss of a child is very hard and it may take longer to get back to normal.
Try taking baby steps. Do small things to occupy your mind.
There are groups that have gone through the same thing.
Check with your doctor, he may direct to them.

Mn, those are side effects of depression. However, the weight gain should be reversed. That or they'll eating something more enjoyable than their usual intake. Please go see the doctor? Afterwards, take a break and do something for yourself only, and place yourself on a daily regiment if not already (veges, lots of fluids and such)

Depression definitely includes insomnia... but not weight gain if you're barely eating.
Your hair falling out and the weight gain sounds hormonal; I would suggest that you consult an endocrinologist.
