Why should you be getting him a gift? I do not buy gifts for my friends when they are going away on holiday.
But assuming a gift is appropriate. I would not bother with warm clothing. If he has arranged to go to the Antartic for 5 weeks I would hope he has already purchased suitable warm clothing.
What he will need is some entertainment, particlarly if the weather should close in. What about an MP3 player loaded with his favourite music. Or if you are on a budget some books.

Although I've yet to find myself at either of the two Poles, there are several things I might consider...one would definitely be the thermal Flask for Brandy. They actually make ski poles that have glass tubes in them. The handle is the cork. If your going to get that, remember the Brandy!! a realy good pair of sunglasses, because the sun reflecting off the snow can blind you. A one peice snow suit insulated to the max. .. and a teddy bear, sent with love from you and his/her friends. (they'll need something warm to cuddle up to down there)!!!

Give him a gold plated boatswain's call and thermal fingerless gloves [from Demart] in bright red.
If he is near Ross Bay and climbs the nearby mountain ask him to bring back the Tesco trolly at the top. It is from the Portsmouth branch. Unless of course he is in HM Navy and has a stack of trollies loaded.

I always do two presents, one joke and one real. Going to Antartica, a book on masturbation may be appropriate as either the joke or the real.

Really good warm socks - those with an insert to stop blistering. Or how about a nice diary so your friend can keep notes of all her adventures
