he's going too fast and not paying attention to what is going on. if you do something and race to the end, you might not notice a mistake that you had made somewhere in the process until it is too late to change it.

I agree ! It's practically saying that people that are in a hurry never notice what good or bad is in front of them until the time for it has gone by . If he's running to get some where , his mind will be fised on getting there and he just runs and on, and by the time he sees the edge , it's too late because he has so much speed and he is so close to the edge that he probably just falls over .
