Taoism is similar to Buddhism, and Hinduism, but is has no gods per say. It is the search for the path to true enlightenment. And each individual is believed to have a unique path that they must follow. But the ultimate goal is to become enlightened, so you don't have to reincarnate to learn more about being. It was established in China during the Warring States period, about 200 BC.

I believe Taoism is a religion, but I guess it can be both.

Here's what Wikipedia says:

Taoism (sometimes written as Daoism) is the English name for:

(a) a philosophical school based on the texts the Tao Te Ching (ascribed to Laozi and alternately spelled Dao De Ching) and the Zhuangzi.
(b) a family of organized Chinese religious movements such as the Zhengyi ("Orthodoxy") or Quanzhen ("complete reality") sects, which collectively trace back to Zhang Daoling in the late Han Dynasty;
(c) a Chinese folk religion.

Religion is actually a way you define or make sense of your life. If you follow Taoism, it is a religion. It just doesn't involve a 'god' but a life force. Atheism can also be defined as a religion. You need 'faith' to trust that 'god' doesn't exist, or that a 'life force' exists...
Perhaps you should KNOW exactly what you believe before you start BELIEVING it. google it?
