Please allow me to answer this on a very personal level. I know I am speaking for myself and maybe other people don't feel this way but what makes me an American is absolute and undying love for my country, my flag, my people. Most of all, what makes me an American is the deepest gratitude and respect that I have for the fallen ones, the Viet Nam vets, the ones we have lost in this war in Iraq and other wars that involved this great country. It makes me feel humble to say the pledge of allegiance and to gaze up at our flag while it's flying in the breeze. That is something no criminal who doesn't know the history of this great nation or who doesn't care, can take away from me.

Americans-People born here or through the legal process obtain citizenship. Made up of many nationalities, races, religions, cultures.
American pride-those who fought hard to make this country great and their children who love it. People who came and accepted the laws the country was built on. And added to it by blending and helping to create a better nation through laws and government and love. A set of laws to help all with special conditions so all may have a voice and not just government (not unlimited condition-you were not to cause injury). Included was a code of understood conduct-certain morals.
To be law-biding. Pay taxes, respectful to those in Authority. To do ones best to defend the people of this country so they are protected from hurtful things. A Constitution was created to help support the people and help them to protect. This for for the people here not the world.
Sadly many are trying to break that down even though its record was good.
It doesn't make us better than others. But many have try to do the best they can-and the results have been well indeed.
If it is not protected in many ways-those results could change and I believe not for the better.

Technically, if you live in either continent of North American or South American you can label yourself as an American.
However, these days American has come to almost be synonymous with Citizen of the United States of American, so you need to be careful when using such language.

Here we go again....
Stop putting this country in a nice little package that you see fit to meet your close minded standards.
Its just not your America! Its a country that was founded on freedom and diversity. People were welcomed here from ALL over the world, not just white Europe.
You talk about freedoms which is a great virtue, but what about diversity? If you continue with your definition of what it is to be America, then we will have no more freedoms.
Because freedom and diversity cannot exist without each other.....take a course in history lady...

What makes me an American follows;
I was born in America, I have all legal rights of this country. I vote, I've served this Country in the Military in time of Peace and War. I work and I pay taxes. I pledge no other allegiance to any other Country or State. Iam an American.

Well, I think the term, "American" or "Christian" or "Asian American" or even age and color should be irrelevant, because they're just titles. I know some Asians who live here and they weren't born in America, but they work harder than most Americans I know.
I was born in America myself, of course, but I like to think of myself as part of the world, and not just a part of one country. If we think small, then we'll always be lonely, but if we are open-minded, then there will always be people who will accept us for who we are inside instead of what is on the outside.

My birth certificate and the fact that if America were in a war, there is no question that America is the country I would want to have win, regardless of who they were fighting.
Can the illegals say that?

A US citizen is a child of american parents, born in america. The senate now wants to sell citizenship for $2,500. I don't like that idea...the whole immigration thing has gotten really stupid, I think maybe we need about a 6-year moratorium on immigration of all kinds, which means we need our borders enforced...

A TRUE American is one of any color or heritage, that is a citizen of the U.S, that truly loves the U.S and will defend it against any attack, foreign or domestic.

I am an American, not just because I was born here. But, when I went to the U.K and Costa Rico, they told me as I was passing through customs that I indeed was an American.
