You're not supposed to do that.

I understand the above answers, however, after having a dog that wouldn't ever hurt anyone, and now having a dog that WILL protect me - I have to admit, I sleep a lot better at night now and I'm not scared to go out walking at 3AM either if she's with me.

If it's self-defence related, I don't think you need to train your dog to attack on command. Some dogs are able to distinguish when someone is being attacked and are able to scare anyone off. Plus, just having the dog there is usually enough of a factor. As the dog's 'mum' or 'dad' - they have a bond with you already as they're a part of your pack.

Care and control of the dog at all times is crucially important especially if you have a dominant breed type, e.g. rottie, GS, PB, etc. It's more important that your dog has learned restraint than if it can attack on command.

This is what I do:
I take some ski gloves and make it mad by grabbing it's mouth gently and shaking it SOFTLY because if I do it harder it may get brain damage. Then when it growls I say good. Let your dog look at windows and bark at a few people. Then I say enough after a few minutes or when the dog gets very angry and looks like it's about to break the window. When you take it for walks bring ski gloves, because if the dog sees something that it doesn't like then you can take it away. Just teach it to listen at your voice, that's the big thing.

You didn't mention what kind of dog you are asking about.
I bought a Boxer for protection. We got him when he was 6 weeks old and have had him in Obedience classes, but I would not want him to attack on demand, I just know that if we give him the proper care and love him when and if we ever need him for protection he will be there for us. I have heard many stories of boxers being there to save the lives of their families.
If your trying on your own to train your dog, be very careful it might be a child it will hurt.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR DOGS ACTIONS!
If your going to be a pet owner be a responisble one

Why? attack dogs do not make good pets. If you need protection take up self defense classes. If you teach your dog to attack and it kills or injures someone then you may go to jail and the dog will be put down. How is fair to the dog.

Well it would have to have professional training.... That's along the lines as hiring a person who also trains police dogs. You don't want to do it if your not trained. You could really put yourself and the dog in danger.

This is something I would not recommend. Remember that you are responsible for whatever your dogs does. If your dog kills someone, what do you think will happen to you?
