This is my opinon on the subject, I know most will not agree and some will agree with me on this matter.

First of all every breed has there ups and downs, The pit bull was raised to fight. They are generaly very nice towards people, The bad part alot of them will not tolerate another dog because of the strong fighting lines behind them. So i do not recomend them with other pets esp small animals but if raised from a puppy and well socialized with other dogs from puppyhood up they should be fine. But i wouldnt take any adult pit and put them with any other dog just because they are fine for that moment doesnt mean once you take your new adult pit homes behavior or territoral problems wont occur. Another thing to consider pits can be protective of the family and home they are high energy dogs who need alot of exercise or they will go stair crazy which will cause them to go mean. I wouldnt reccomend any large adult dog with a family who has young kids. This is not just pits this goes for every breed. This is just what i reccomend for you to do. Since you already have a pit puppy highly socialize him or her with other dogs and kids. Take him or her to the park, Get professional training. Socialization is the key to a good natured dog. Training is a good thing for a pit bull as well as other breeds.
Do you research on the pitbull. Theres alot of people who swear by the breed, Some despise of the pit because of the name people gave them. But honestly i have never met a people aggressive pit bull. I have seen them with prey drives towards other animals. These should be some things to keep in mind if you wanna make a happy healthy good natured pit puppy.
Do you have time to highly socialize this puppy with other dogs and kids and strange places and noises? Do you have the yard for exercise? Can you provide enough attention and training and exercise for this puppy. Can you provide profesional training for this puppy. Please read up about them. Not all pits are mean alot of the people who get them make them mean. But do keep in mind most pits wont tolerate other animals because of there heritage.
I do wish you the best of luck on your pit puppy and if you have any other questions feel free to email me.

It really depends on the dog's nature. If the pup came from a thourough breed the probability of not being good around children is likely higher because they are known to turn on their most beloved owner at any given time and for no good reason and as far as children go,I wouldn't want my kids playing around one unattended because they have short temper spans and this is a proven fact.Just be careful is the bottom line and always have your eyes on the children when their playing with a pitbull especially if the kids are younger than 12. Sincerly,L.P.

I have a friend that raised her pitbull to be very loving and kind BUT one day her 8 year old kept trying to ride it and kept bugging it and it turned around and attacked her. Thank God someone was close by. IT took about three men to pull the dog off of her. NOT a good thing. Haley is okay now but they had to get rid of the dog. I think some pitbulls have their tolerance limits. I would ALSO train the children NOT to bug the dog and have respect for it too...

They are usually fine IF they are treated and trained well. You really should take the pup to obedience classes. You should also teach your kids how to treat the pup. Rough games and tug of war are NOT a good idea. Besides obedience training teach the pup tricks. These are hyper dogs, lots of energy and they bore easily. A bored pit is a pit in trouble. It will need plenty of running, jumping and mental stimulation. I have a staffy and she plays well with my grand kids. One more thing, when the dog has had enough of being "bossed around" by the kids and goes to lay down, teach the kids to respect that.

Pit Bulls are great dogs if they are raised with love and very good with children. When you got the pup did you check out the parents? Have a couple myself and have never seen more loving dogs. Like everything else dogs are a product of their environment. You have an excellent chance of having a great dog since you got it as a pup.

Many pitbulls are extremely social dogs with humans and especially a delight in children. however, due to their strength and exuberance, in most circumstances they are generally best placed with older children.
Pitbulls are enthusiastic learners. They enjoy trick training and many graduate at the head of their obedience class. So you can try teaching your pitbull something about being nice when it gets aggresive. But don't punish it harshly because they are meant to be aggresive at some times. But if it bites your children, then that's a different story.

My questions are: Are you a good dog trainer? Are your children good around dogs?

You can learn to be a good dog trainer. Pit bulls can be very stubborn, strong, dominate dogs. Check out the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic. Excellent advice that works. Start now, raise a healthy happy dog that knows his place in the pack.

Teach your children about dogs and how to behave around dogs. 70% of dog bites happen to children.

I have 8 pit bulls, the are loving and extremely intelligent. I know many that are wonderful family dogs. Good dogs don't happen by accident.

Pitbulls may have a bad rep but dont let that fool you. If hes a puppy and you dont raise it 2 be a fighting dog. If you mistreat it (not saying you will) then it will most likely become mean. You h ave to give it lots of attention and play with it on a daily baises.

Dogs that are mean, are mean because someone made them that way.Teach your puppy as soon as you get it not to bite or growl. You have to teach them who is boss from an early age. I have had a few pitbulls and none of them have ever hurt anyone. Make sure you let your dog be around people, this will show them that humans dont want to hurt them. Be careful letting them around other dogs though, they could catch parvo or other harmful puppy diseases.

If it is a pup still, you might be able to train it to behave itself around the children. If it shows aggression toward the children, tell it, "NO"! Soon, you will have a happy dog and a happy family.
