I have a Jack Russell Terrier she is 10 years old now but acts like she is 5. In the past few years she has become afraid of the booms of fireworks. I live on the lake and there are fireworks like crazy of the 4th. What could I do to comfort her through this years 4th of July celebration?

We always board our dogs at the Petsmart Hotel during the Fourth of July holiday. The "Atrium" Rooms are located in a relatively sound-proofed area and they get to play with other dogs in the huge indoor playroom too. We pick them up after the holiday and they are happy, tails wagging!

Any large boarding kennel or your vet if they do boarding would probably do just as well, but we really like the Petsmart Hotel and the people who work there.

So many dogs go through glass windows or run off and get lost during the holidays from fear of the fireworks that we just don't take the chance with our babies.

If you really want to keep her home during the holiday:

I have heard that Rescue Remedy (flower Essences) helps to keep them calm. Place a few drops in the water dish. I would also crate her just to be safe. Maybe get a Kong dog toy and fill it with the Paste that they sell or other treats that she likes to keep her busy during the fireworks.

Good luck.

I have the same problem.I've heard all kinds of things about desensitizing etc. Your dog will never be 100% fine but for my old girl I stay home, close everything up & turn up the TV or radio. My vet also prescribes valium that I only use around the 4th (for her, not me :-). It's REALLY important that you don't baby her. I know it's hard not to but you only validate her fear if you do. You need to stay calm & act as if it's no big deal. Sing, read a book etc. I've heard great things about Comfort Zone, too but I was not impressed.

your veterinarian has drugs available (very reasonable cost as it is only a couple of pills) to calm your dog throughout the day and night. you should be able to call and pick up the prescription without bringing in your dog, as long as it is your regular vet and your dog has been seen within the last 12 months. this is a very common problem.

Most dogs do the same about fireworks and thunderstorms. I genually give my dog her favorite treat and take her outside and keep her close, so she can understand there isn't any real danger.

You need to find her comfort zone: ie: favorite toys, person, pillow...etc. and reassure her : play with her and hold her during the fireworks. She's going to be scared......but if you are there to comfort her it should help.

Good Luck

Put her in her kennel in a fully lit room with some soft music turned up loud. That is what I do for my Basset Hound

Put your dog's bed in the center of the house, away from windows and ouside walls, if your dog gets nervous, send her to her bed.

Go outside with your dog when it's time to pee/poop. etc be very assertive and demand your dog's attention to keep her focused.

Could you take her to a friend's house further away for the night? She'd really love you for that ; )
