Spices don't spoil but they lose their strength, old spices wouldn't season your food in the same way that they should do it when they're fresh.
Spices shelf life time should be approximately of 3 to 4 years if they're properly stored.
Extracts and Food Colors shelf life, except for the vanilla; is approximately of 4 years. The vanilla has an indefinite shelf life.

I watched a TV show where the cook suggested to replace the spices every 4 months but never buy them from a grocery store. You're supposed to buy them freshly ground from a spice store...I buy my spices from a grocery store and if the spice is in my cupboard a long time, too bad. They are too expensive to toss.

About a year if they are stored at normal room temperature and SEALED so that air does not get at them. Most spices lose their strength progressively when exposed to air because the essential oils evaporate from them. Some spices last longer than others also.
You can freeze them in air-tight containers and they will last MUCH longer.

Good question!
My experience is that the dryer the spice, the longer the shelf life.
Salt is good for years as long as it is kept dry but things like curry and cumin, ect... they contain higher moisture content and will degrade rather quickly on your cupboard shelf.

6 months if kept in a container light cannot get into.
always buy the smallest amount you can, unless you have a group of friends who can share the purchase every 6 months and all of you share the spices.
