I read in a book called "97 ways to make your dog smile" that if your dog is hot to wet its ears, does this really help cool them down?

Yes actually I just don't wet their ears I wet them all up specially in this hot weather. Even thought they don't like water I can see right away how they calm down and relax. I am pretty sure that your dog will be happy if you wet your dog's ears, but just do it when is hot.

Yes, the ears are thin (blood supply is close to the surface) and the evaporation of the water will cool a dogs body temp. Don't get the water in the ears, can lead to ear infections

Yes, but as dogs lose a large percent of their body heat is lost by panting giving them a drink of water thats was not cooled in any way is the best way to cool them down.

To cool your dog down, wet him behind his elbows, his stomach, and under his tail.

If you have a very heavily coated dog, be careful so that he doesn't stay wet behind the elbows as that could make him succeptable to hot spots.

HUH? THAT'S A NEW ONE ON ME...GIVE THEM COOL WATER, SHADE, AND LET THEM PANT...THAT IS A DOG'S NATURAL WAY TO COOL ITS BODY...ALSO GETTING WATER IN THEIR EARS CAN CAUSE EAR INFECTION...ALWAYS USE PLAIN ALCOHOL TO CLEAN INSIDE EARS AS IT EVAPORATES...HOPE THIS HELPS...ALSO MY RANCH DOGS LIKE TO WET THEIR BELLIES IN THE POND...AND THEY KNOW BETTER THAN I IF THAT WORKS!

It works better to put something cool on the pads of their feet. If they're really hot you can put a damp towel on the floor & they'll find it if they really need it.

it does work. dogs can't sweat, so if you provide the same affect for them, it cools them off.
