I can only answer from my own experience and say I have heard his voice in both the physical and the spiritual (which is dreams), let me explain.
I heard Him speak to me the first time both in a dream and in the physical when I was a young teen and searching for answers to the many of life’s questions. For many years I rejected obeying His voice for many reasons even though I was raised in a Christian home. I still did not obey for many years until finally looking up from a hospital bed with terminal cancer, 30 years ago last month. That was the first time I felt His personal touch as a fire like an electric current burned away my death and gave me another chance at life.
Since then I answered slowly and haltingly and have found it is easier to obey than not but I am a very stubborn man. I have heard His voice in various ways, in my thoughts, in my ears but the most special sound was on the other side of the river of death. I have crossed over twice in the last four years and did not want to return either time but I was told it was just not time for me to leave yet, that there were too many things left to do here first.
I have been allowed to see so much and to experience so much and through all I have been through in the past and through all I am going through right now I would change nothing but the time I wasted not responding to His voice when I was young. I discovered that His voice guides me if I will but take the time to listen for Him and that when I focus on His Only begotten Son I am more open to His voice and am more willing to listen.
I hope this was not too long and I hope it answers your question at least a little.

Most of the time when I am praying its like I am talking to myself, but I am really talking to God. Everyonce in a while a really good thought or idea pops into my head that I just wouldn't normally think of that is one way I can tell. I also try to back up everything in the bible. It is the word of God. He speaks to you everytime you read it. I try to find answers in the bible. Also sometimes he uses other people to tell you things. Like a friend might come along and say the perfect thing that needed to hear or give you the perfect advice. If the advice sounds biblical so if it doesn't conflict with the Bible then its probably from God. Sometimes things are plainly coming from Him other times its a bit more thinking they do. Just have faith that He will let you know if your screwing something up and ask Him to show you, but I am guessing if you don't feel convicted about anything after you pray that your probably doing what God wants you to.

You need to have a close relationship with him. It's like when your mother rings you up on the phone, you know it's her voice.
In my case, when he speaks it's usually like a strong thought or impression in my mind.
It takes time, but you need to put yourself in a position where you believe he exists and that he is interested in you. In God's kingdom he makes the rules and you must be prepared to obey what he says.
So the question I ask you is: why do want to hear his voice?
Try reading the Bible (The New Testament - Matthew, Mark Luke and John) and tell god you want to find him. He wants honesty from you above all, so tell him how you really feel.

Daniel 1:17
As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
Acts 2:17
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God,I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Matthew 3:17
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
God can "speak" to us in many ways, the few that was mentioned above, but He can also speak to us through the Scripture.
The Bible says that as we "draw near to God and He will draw near to you (James 4:8). Christians need to learn to discern when He is trying to communicate with us.
He never goes against Scripture
He communicates to draw you to Him.
Seeking His voice and learning HOW He speaks to us is the ket to discerning what and when He is "speaking."

Will this answer:
One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed that he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of Footprints in the sand,
one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the Footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of Footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest
and saddest times of his life.
This really bothered him, and he questioned the Lord about
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed
that during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of Footprints.
I don't undestand why,
when I needed you most,
you would leave me."
The Lord replied:
"My son, My precious child,
I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you have seen only one set of Footprints,
it was Then that I carried you.

You can tell by the good works you produce, and the love you show to your borthers and sisters in Christ. Isn't this what bearing witness to the Lord is all about?

God no longer speaks to anyone in dreams. Note following scriptures:
Heb. 1:1, 2: “God, who long ago spoke on many occasions and in many ways [including dreams] to our forefathers by means of the prophets, has at the end of these days spoken to us by means of a Son [Jesus Christ, whose teachings are recorded in the Bible].”
1 Cor. 13:8: “ … whether there are gifts of prophesying [and at times God conveyed prophecies to his servants by means of dreams], they will be done away with.”
1 Tim. 4:1: “However, the inspired utterance says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances [sometimes conveyed in dreams] and teachings of demons.”
We can, though, communicate with God though prayer, by means of Christ’s ransom sacrifice. In addition, God’s written Word is our divinely given guide to the truth. Regarding it, Jesus Christ said: “Your word is truth.” (John 17:17) 2 Tim. 3:16, 17: “All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching . . . that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.”
Christians today can also avail themselves of God’s holy spirit. Jesus said we should ask for it, so why not do just that? Pray to Jehovah to give you this wonderful gift not only in times of stress but on every occasion. In addition, read the Bible so that holy spirit can speak to you. (Compare Hebrews 3:7.) Meditate on what you read and apply it so that holy spirit can be an influence in your life. (Psalm 1:1-3)
One operation of God’s holy spirit is to inform, to illuminate, to reveal truths. Shortly before his death, Jesus told his disciples: “I have many things yet to say to you, but you are not able to bear them at present. However, when that one arrives, the spirit of the truth, he will guide you into all the truth.”—John 16:12, 13.
God’s holy spirit also served as a teacher and remembrancer. Jesus said: “The helper, the holy spirit, which the Father will send in my name, that one will teach you all things and bring back to your minds all the things I told you.”—John 14:26. The spirit operated as a teacher by opening the disciples’ minds to things that they had previously heard from Jesus but had not fully understood. Prophecies regarding Christ’s death and resurrection, for instance, took on new meaning with the aid of holy spirit. (Matthew 16:21; John 12:16)
