even when the pc has been switched off all night. it causes the programme to freeze until the fan stops.

It's supposed to... worry when it doesn't, it is cooling the inside heat down and you'd have a fire if it didn't!

I don't think that its the fan causing your pc to freeze, I think something is overheating and thats making it freeze. The fan should be on all the time, especially in this weather.
I'd get it to a repair shop or get a mate who knows what they're doing to take a look.

You might want to visit pcworld.com. Their download page has free utilities that monitor these overheats. If it sounds like a jet gearing up for take-off, you need to get a can of compressed air, unplug it, remove the back of the processor and clean it. This happens when the fan pulls in dust and grime which causes overheats.

Laptop or Desktop , my desktop fan is on all the time also, its supposed to be.
