As long as english remains the first choice, in america at least, I'm more or less ok with it, but I do think/feel that english should be the common and ONLY language of business in the United States, because as soon as you introduce another language, you start cutting people out. I think there should be more personal translation services, but within bounds, and those that come to america to work and live should look forward to the 'fun' of learning english. Since english is a pretty easy language to learn, it shouldn't be that much of a challenge, or take that long. The whole thing where Mexico is trying to nickel-and-dime their way into the United States and ask for this, ask for that, demand such -and-such is getting really tiring, and a lot of em don't seem to understand that the rules are different north of the US/Mexico border. Mexico's not going to roll out the red carpet for americans demanding the things their citizens are asking for in the United States, and lacking that kind of understanding/agreement/cooperation is one of the Big Obstacles I think in having good cross-border relations. For the now, I just want the border fence built, then in a couple years we can start talking about guest workers and stuff, but not before there's a tangible people-barrier that lays out the map so people understand...if we fail to act now, 5-10 years down the road it'll be setting the stage for trouble...

Feels great to have a choice. Press 1 for English, 2 for a language I don't understand, 3 to talk to a person I don't understand who happens to speak perfect English.... :)

That is one of the most stupidest things I know of. This is America and we speak ENGLISH here! What I do when I call some place and have that I press the "0" for the operator there. Then when they ask what I want I tell her that I want to speak to someone in English. When they ask why I didn't press the "1" I tell them that this is American and I shouldn't have to press the "1"

Iv'e never really spent time thinking about this, since it doesn't even matter, so give me a second to find out how I feel about it.

Okay here is what I have come up with. I don't really like the sound of the recording that tells you to press one. It usually sounds like a creepy robot. However, on the plus side I do like to push buttons, and the 1 key has a really satisfying tone when you push it. So overall I think my feelings on it are that sometimes I like it (when i really want to push a button) but other times it isn't worth listening to the recording.
I hope i answered your question fully.

I've NEVER had to do that and I'd like to know what you've called recently that required you to do so.
I think the whole "press 1 for english" thing is BS and is probably something some AM radio nitwit conjured to rile up the public and boost ratings.
Don't be led around by your nose!

There shouldn't need to be an option. It should be in ENGLISH. I'm willing to bet in places where Spanish is the most spoken language, they don't have a "Press 2 for English".
And if we have to have choices, why only Spanish? Why not German or Chinese? We bend over backwards for Spanish speakers, why not for other speakers...

I don't have a problem with it, but recently our company started dealing with a number of Quebec-based companies. In Quebec, pressing 1 usually gets you French, so now I have to listen more closely to the recording.

It's funny: it discriminates against all other minorities whose native language is not English. Latinos should learn English if they want to be a part of US system.
