Amtrak is the brand name of the intercity passenger train system created on May 1, 1971 in the United States. Officially known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, the name "Amtrak" is a portmanteau of the words "American" and "track."

In the earlier years of train travel, Congress (U.S. Congress) chartered a company named Amtrak. Since it was at that time fully funded by the government, they wanted the word "American" in it's name. The "Am" in "Amtrak" means "American". "trak" is probably just their fancy way of spelling "track."
