You do not need a passport for Canada, however, you need at least 2 forms of ID. You can also get a Pass that id good for something like 30 days. I'm pretty sure that you can get this through a travel agency...posssibly AAA.

If you were born in the United States you don't need one. Just make sure you have photo ID with you and a copy of your Birth Certificate. If you weren't born in the United States you will need a passport.

not necessary, but what the heck take a risk & get one. It can get you into other countries too.
