that someone who does NOT pay for there own gas in there vehicle to complain about driving an extra 20km to pick up there son so they can see himfor a night

I'm not sure I understand the situation as to why someone would complain about driving to pick up their own son... whether or not they have to pay for the gas.

All I can say is some people just complain like it's part of their nature, sad to say...

If you are going out of your way and this is a regular thing then I see nothing wrong with asking them to top off the tank once in a while.
If they want to complane let them take a taxi or the sort.

ah yes another puzzle in the game of life. teach him family values of not picking him up and make him walk the extra 20 km. then we will see how what he values more. no it's not fair to you.
