When I read those questions, I make the assumption that if the person had the money for a vet, they wouldn't be asking us. Some are kids that probably had to beg to have a pet, their parents may refuse to pay a vet's bill.

Some don't have the resources, I think everyone would rather have professional care than ask a group and hope someone competent and animal-experienced is on and will take time to write an answer. As with anything, a lot of emergencies happen after closing hours or during the weekend when vets are closed. Not all communities have emergency clinics; some questioners live in remote areas where vets aren't within easy distances.

And some don't live in a country where veterinarian care is readily available. I have given bird and rabbit persons my private email and helped them online, only to find much of what I take for granted as easily accessible and affordable in the US isn't even available in some of the countries. It is humbling to see the determination of some of these questioners to save their pet when they don't have access to the most basic of supplies.

So many veterinarians refuse to accept payments, it's cash, credit or no treatment. Because I have what is considered exotics (birds and bunnies), I can pay $500 and the pet die and the vet doesn't know what is going on. I have nursed through animals the vets gave up on (after soaking me for every cent I could come up with, in some cases over $1,000 for one animal).

I don't think vets are less any place else. I am a member of a bird group that meets once a month on Sundays. Today a non-member brought an egg-bound cockatiel (eggbinding is life-threatening, it can kill a bird in less than 24 hours). Several of our members work with vets, one called to set up an emergency visit at a clinic. The emergency fee was $175. The couple refused to take their bird.

I have bred, raised, trained & groomed dogs most of my life.

I know that everytime I get a cold or the flu, I don't run to the doctor & in non-emergency situations, I don't run to the vet. But, I have also studied dog health extensively. I have worked for vets and have 2 life science degrees. I have a library of medical books and a vet that is friendly and helpful.

Here is the big problem, most people don't bother to learn about dog illnesses, preventative care, etc. I read some very scary stuff here also. And many of the answers scare me. If you don't know, don't treat, period.

Most people wait too long to tend to their dog's health needs. There is no preventive care, poor diet and flithy living conditions. And when these folks notice that their dog is sick, it is really, really sick. I hate it when people tell me that their dog has been sick for over a week. Or a pup is listless.

I wish that people that don't know about medicine would quit answering questions but, that won't happen.

I also wish that everyone would check their dog everyday. Look at their eyes, ears, mouth and stools. Check their skin/coat for problems. Have them seen annually by a vet, use heart worm preventative and a flea control product. Feed them a good diet, not table scraps or cat food or $3 a bag dog food.

Keeping healthy dogs is not cheap. If you won't do the work to educate yourself about dogs & you can't afford proper medical care, don't get a dog.

I agree with you. Bring them to the vet. But, also realize that there are people out there that can't afford a $300+ vet bill. Could you? I know your answer already. Your answer is then don't have a pet. I think these people have a kind and loving heart. Do they "really" love their pets? YES they do.

I take my pet like clock work. My dog is like a kid to me.

But most people don't have money to get thier Dog treated which to me they shouldn't own one if they are not going to take of their pet.
They are to poor, and put the bills first. But
God made all living things and says in the Bible, Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

If it came down to where I was starving and had to take my dog to the vet or eat then yes I would eat first. If I couldn't take care of my pet I would find it a good home.

This would be because some people who do not have a lot of experience with animals, be it a dog or a cat, may be asking a question that individuals who have years of experience raising or breeding animals may be able to answer without that person having to shell out tons of $$$$$ to be told possibly the same thing by a vet!!!!!!

Animals (that would include dogs, cats, and birds) are not sacred or a great mystery to everyone but the "great god vet". Many people manage to successfully treat themselves for all kinds of conditions without going to the "all knowing doctor", why would the same not apply to their animals?. If you can bring yourself to learn a little about simple treatments for animals you can save thousands of dollars and unnecessary stress on your animals.
Vets don't always know the right thing to do for your animal, sometimes they are guessing or experimenting with treatments (gasp). They are also human (shocker) and may be influenced by greed (another gasp).

I agree with you. I also realize that people cannot always afford to take the dog to the vet. I was one of these people one time and i made the decision, if I cannot afford to take my pet to the vet then I did not need a pet. It is not fair to the pet if the owner cannot take it to the vet if it is sick, or injured. There is vets out there that are not that expensive, but you have to really look around. I have one in my town, and I have a st. bernard that was sick with parvo for two weeks and it only cost 84.00 for the whole length of time there and that includes shots. If he is around i know there has to be others somewhere. Vets are like doctors, people need them so they charge a fortune. My vet charges a little more over his costs on medicines and etc. He told me once that other veteranarians he knows charge 5 times or more their cost for medications and etc.
The point is though even though vets are expensive in most places, if people cannot afford to take it to the vet if needed then DO NOT GET A PET EVEN THOUGH YOU WANT ONE

Alot of people are saying some people can't afford medical care for pets as they are too expensive and some home treatments can be done. I know this to be true and it is not because they do not want to help them, but honestly cannot afford it. And I do know some home treatments will save a life, but when your dog is bleeding and in really bad pain yahoo answers is not the place to go.

Well, I realize that there are people that say they love their pets, but sometimes these people do not care to take them to the vet. FOR INSTANCE, I have a neighbor that say they love their dogs. Well a puppy was brung to me by someone that came from these people. This puppy is 7 weeks old, looks to be 3 weeks old, and light as a feather and very ribby. I told these people the pups were in dire need to be wormed, the comment was we do not have the time nor the money. I said 5.00 at walmart wormer is better than nothing.

These people went out and bought a huge swimming pool, they buy junk cars from individuals, but yet they cannot go buy a bottle of wormer, come on people. No not everyone is like this but alot of times when people say they cannot afford a vet they just do not want to. Alot of times it is not about the money, as long as it is not spent on their dog, but yet spend 3-500 dollars on junk cars that just sit and rust away, or buy a big a** swimming pool. These puppies will die if not treated for worms, guess what I treated them as it is not fair to the animal they are selfish.
They have been reported for neglect also. They have had 2 big dogs die in a months time, very skinny and no shelter, but they say we fed them good but couldn't take them to the vet. THEY DIDN"T WANT TO TAKE MONEY AWAY FROM THEIR WANTS IS ALL. See why people do say what they do about people not taking them to a vet, it is not always because they really cannot afford to. It takes time and money away from pleasure.

to Stella blue - if you cannot afford to take care of your 'beloved cat' then why in the world did you get one in the first place?? - sheesh of all sheeshes!!!

I agree with you Sparkler.. people see the cute puppy or the adorable kitten, and they never ever ever stop to think what money goes into one. Just today, I met a woman at a pet store and she saw me with my 3 dogs, and she said 'how did you train them to go pee in one spot?.... I went on and on, gave her pretty good advice - then she told me what she tried and seemed frustrated that nothing was happening.. I asked her how long she had the puppy - ONE DAY!!! If she thinks that dogs are born to know what to do and where to do it, when you ask to do it.. my golly they have a huge awakening coming to them when it comes to any animal getting sick!!!! then they use money as an excuse, or the 'vet' is too expensive. Save your money, get insurance whatever, but you bought it, you take the responsibility of that animal.

Vet are extremely expensive, though. I paid $300 for blood tests alone for my cat. That does not even include the treatment. You may really love your pet but can't afford to pay the vet. Then what?
