This is not dogma. Life is its own purpose. The purpose of life as a whole is to cause life to continue. It sounds like double-speak doesn't it? It's not. Here's real help: the term "exist" might mean "being" in any of several different modes. All matter exists physically and so do you. Ideas exist mentally with or without referring to a physical thing. A plan or an intention exists mentally before it becomes an action and then gains physical existence. Then there's spiritual existence. If you love and your love is real, then it exists spiritually. Humans exist in all of these modes. Now that you know the basics, the purpose of any individual in the chain of existence is to gather, direct and transfer energy. If you raise a child, you are transferring your energy to that child. If you write a book or compose a piece of music or make any art, you are transferring energy to the people who "enjoy" your art- however you would like to define "enjoy".
The overwhelming majority of people who have ever lived have defined the purpose of their lives through raising children- not just making babies, but making a baby then giving care and education and helping the child to become the most fully-developed adult he or she can be. But there's a lot to be said for making art and literature, too. It might seem a little empty if you only think of it personally. Everyone dies eventually. But if you leave something valuable behind when you go, you've done as much as you can do. Especially if it's a well-raised child- they'll remember you with love. That's as good as it gets. Hope this helps.

you were born for a purpose... a purpose designed by God. All the things that you are mentioning are something designed by the ideas of other people, who just like you and I were searching for purpose and happiness. But the truth is each of us is different and have different gifts to offer to the world. God likes variety, he didnt give everyone the same talents and abilities and therefore what completes the life of each person is different.
The television makes it seem that you should be famous or rich to have had any purpose, but that is not true. Your life's journey should be about the things that inspire you and complete you. That may be farming or art or singing or fishing or something other than the way that you make your living right now. I believe if you love doing something enough then you can make a living doing it.
But the truest thing to remember is to ask God what path your life should be taking and if you are off track ask God to put your life on the right track. You are not here by accident, you are touching lives everyday. You dont have any idea of the words or deeds that you have done that motivated someone around you to be their best.
It is my prayer that you will find your way to the inspired peace that can only come from knowing that you are exactly where God wants you to be. Trust that God is with you on this search for existence.

There is no ultimate purpose, meaning or value unless there is a creator God. Individuals may give you what they think their purpose is or what they think is important and reason for living, but without a creator God it is all futile, vain and meaningless. Without a creator God all is a meaningless cosmic accident. We come into existence by accident, without a creator, we die and go to no meaning, purpose or value and in between there is no reason, no meaning, no purpose or value. People make up their own, meaning, purpose and value, but even that is a pitiful exercise. The only thing that makes sense without a creator God is personal survival (but for no purpose), avoiding pain and getting all the pleasure one can, for there is nothing else. One's pleasure might be doing good for others or only selfish pursuits, but doing good for others is only done because it is pleasurable. Only a creator God can give meaning, purpose and value. Only God can tell us why we were created, why we are here and where we are going.

Well said and I'm contemplating the same thing. I am a good person and lead my life in a Christian fashion (although am not religious)... and I continue to be surprised by how awful people are. Not sure why and find myself questioning the value of continuing to live a life where I have no purpose and daily life is filled with awful people.

You have ask a really deep question. Some people never get to the point in their lives to ask that question because they are too busy making money, or what ever involves their lives. We are here with a purpose and it is up to you to find it.

Preparing our souls for eternal life with God, only thorugh acceptance of Jesus as your savior and repent of your sins.
The life we have here on earthi is very short and temporary, but we are to prepare for an eternal ife with God. Those who reject God, go to hell with satan. The choice is yours.
