Shelter - I don't have the money to afford a purebred dog. Plus, you can find some cool pups at the shelter!

On average, purebred dogs make up 20-40% of dogs in shelters, which doesn't include the many, many purebreds adopted out through breed specific volunteer groups so it's hardly fair to say that purebreds can't be "saved". I have only ever adopted dogs in my life and have volunteered with both all breed and breed specific organizations so I must say that I like the predictability that is offered by well-bred purebreds (don't get me started on puppy-mills or BYBs). I can certainly see situations where people want to buy a purebred (interested in showing, eventing, etc. or a breeder looking to upgrade stock) and I can see myself in some of those situations. What I don't understand is why so many people pay so much money for ill-bred dogs in someone's backyard - or even worse ill-bred dogs in someone's backyard with no papers but a cutsie name.

Not necessarily because you are saving a dog but I really prefer mutts. I have had pure breeds and Heinz dogs. The mixed breeds were all much smarter than the papered animals. My neighbor has a pure breed German Shepard. This animal goes well beyond dumb or dumber. He may even exceed dumbest. In five years this animal hasn't,t figured out that it's OK for me to be in my yard. He barks at anything, a dog a block away, a squirrel, me opening the door, the grass growing, etc.

So just give me a mutt, thank you very much.

I do collie rescue and my own collie came from a rescue. Pure breed rescues often pull dogs from shelters, get them up to date on shots, make sure they are spayed or neutered, and keep them in breed experienced foster homes until a home is found. All this for a nominal fee to cover expenses so that they can continue to help other dogs of their breed.

Pure breds can be every bit as good as a mixed breed. Please don't discriminate against them. They deserve good homes too!

a majority of those purebred dogs find themselves at the shelter. what's interesting is the owner not coming to the shelter to find them. how do i know? i work at an animal shelter. the difference between the local government shelter and humane society places are the shelter is mostly stray dogs where the humane societies take pets that people no longer want or are unable to keep anymore.
i can't tell you how many times we've had purebred dogs come into our shelter and are adopted to a great family.
check your local shelters, humane society, and rescues!

Over the years my experience has been much better adopting a dog from a shelter. It is easy to see which dogs are wanting a home or family just by looking into their eyes and the way they behave when you introduce yourself. Pure breds, to me, seem to be so high strung and nervous that it very hard to train them or keep them calm.

I would definitely prefer saving one. I adopted mine from a shelter rather than buying a pure bred one and I love her to pieces. Her personality is so amazing. the mixed pieces of who she is makes her so unique and makes her who she is. I prefer that over anything else.

My dog is from a shelter. I still paid for him but that just covered the costs of what they have to pay for food. I have had him for 5 months and would never trade him for anything.
