Surprisingly, there is an answer to this question. Pencils have been painted this way since the 1890's apparently, because manufacturers wanted a way to express the fact that they consisted of chinese graphite. Yellow is symbolism for royalty in China, so thats why they are painted yellow.

Let Dr. Education educ8_u: The yellow is easier to find amongst your paperwork in your booksack. However if you're not happy with the yellow pencil go purchase one of the ones with different designs on it. Or better yet, get the ones with your name on it.

Brian G is absolutely correct. Most pencils were manufactured in China originally, and the color yellow is associated with royalty, prosperity and good fortune.

Steven has it right, they are dark yellow so as to mimic a school bus,...before they were yellow, they were gray, before that, they were just graphite rods, before that, they had chalk and slates."a long time ago, kids wore yellow scarves to show that they were primary school students,.......thats why soemtimes in old kids' books you'll see illustartions of kids wearing yellow scaves. at one point, kids wore scarves that were red and some were blue, this deliniated them from one another by grade and colors for each grade after 4Th to the 6Th........it fell out of fashion fro some reason.

I thought they were yellow. You know, the colour of your hair. Maybe that explains your confusion....
