Don't braid it- as you move around when you sleep, the braid will be pulled every which way and break hairs. Same thing with a bun or a ponytail, unless you put pantyhose over your head.
I usually just brush my hair right before I go to bed so the tangles I've gotten during the day aren't there when I sleep. When I wake up, my hair is a lot less tangly than it would have been.
Hope this helps!

I use a few drops of smoothing oil applied while my hair is wet right out of the shower. (Repair & Shine, Bio Silk, Glossing Polish are all good and Target just started carrying some of them, so they're easy to find.) My hair is really long & never tangles unless I don't use the smoothing oil. A little bit goes a long way and I only scrunch it into the ends of my hair, not at the scalp or it will look oily.
I use a hair pick to comb my hair out after I scrunch in the smoothing oil. Flip your hair upside down and work through the ends first then up towards your scalp. It will get distributed evenly and your hair will be super silky & tangle free when it dries.
Also, keep your ends trimmed to prevent splits that will tangle and use a good shampoo/conditioner...

My hair is only waist long (30+ inches), so probably not as long as some of the others answering here. However, I am now to the point that I have to braid mine every night to avoid getting it pulled (rolled over on) by my snuggling husband.

usually you can put it up anyway you like it... like a bun, a braid, ponytail, or anyhairstyle that uses all the hair (except like those fancy ones people uses when they are going some where special) i use to do it and sometimes i do it now even though my hair isn't as long as it use to

Usually I wrap my hair around my head in a circular way..You can use hair clips or mousse to keep it in place. Then I put a scrarf around it. In the morning, I unwrap it in the opposite direction from which I wrapped it. When you do this your hair is more bouncy and easy to comb threw.
