In an ideal world the best course of action would be to tame the two budgies separately so that they are both very used to human company and then introduce them. However for practical reasons this is usually not possible. Our experience has been that they do of course prefer the company of their own kind but they also like to spend time with us both individually and together.

With our birds, the first one (a female) became tame quickly. We spent a lot of time working with her and she is very accepting of us now. When we introduced the second bird we continued to make as much effort and the second one (also a female) saw from our interactions with the first that it was safe to hang with the humans. :-)

The first bird reached maturity and, incredibly, started to fall in love with me. She would go nuts for my company and stand in the mating pose when I talked to her! That all changed when the third bird - a very high-quality male - arrived as you can imagine. The third one is a very good-natured bird and has little fear of humans so it's been easy with him. Then we got a fourth who is settling in nicely although he is a little skittish - we suspect bad treatment at the pet store.

For us the key has been to give them as much attention as we can, just like a family (my wife and I are too old to consider having kids so the birds fit the bill). If you aren't able to devote as much time for whatever reasons then I agree with the answers that suggest buying toys and other distractions for them. Even though we have four now, we still leave the television or radio on for them sometimes.

Hope this helps. :-)

It can go a couple different ways.

Personally, I would not get another budgie. It's possible that they will attach to one-another and the one you have now could turn against you. Or it could pluck the hell out of itself because it's being forced to be with the other budgie.. and it wants to be with you. Or it could go after the new bird.

Get a senegal parrot. They're neater than heck. Get another cage. Senegals are african like the african grey. We have one and it talks like a son of a gun.

If you must get another bird, please get one from a reputable breeder, not the pet store.

We have an african grey and a senegal. I reallly really wanted a macaw or eclectus (those are neat birds too but spendy). But I decided against it.. coz that'd mean I'd be splitting time away from the existing birds. We're not home enough to even give them all the attention they deserve as it is.

In summary, I wouldn't get another budgie unless you're wanting to breed or something. They're not like dogs or cats.

Personally, I'd spend more quality time with the one bird you have already. Spend money on toys and fun things.

Either way, please spend the same quality time and at the same times of day with the bird you have now and don't reduce that time together.

in the long run, it'll probably be better for all involved if you get budgie another budgie.

the hardest part may be the original budgie adjusting to a new budgie, but if original budgie is able to do that, the new budgie will provide companionship for old budgie, you will feel less preoccupied and guilty spending time away from the budgies, and the intensity of the interdependence will lessen in a healthy way. of course, the intimacy of your relationship with old budgie will never again be the same, but that's a price to be paid for a healthier situation overall.

Yeah, you should get another because it's alone and it'll be able to share your love similarily with the other budgie. I mean if your not home, then it has play time and love for the other budgie but if you do have time then you can play with both. Really, you should get another one, one budgie can die easily without a companion or friend, get another one.

It will learn to adapt to the other one, I'm serious, if you don't have time, get another one, the old budgie will learn to befriend the other.

You need to be very careful here. As your bird is attached to you he/she may not accept another very easily. They would have to be introduced very slowly and carefully. If you intend to keep them in the same cage, they must not be of the same sex as they will constantly fight, (they do not breed unless you provide nesting boxes etc) If your bird talks, introducing another bird will stop him/her,as he/she will revert back to budgie garble.
When you go out do you leave a radio on? has he/she got a mirror? Do you alternate the toy's on a regular basis so he/she has something different to play with? Is your bird near a window, where he /she can see outside? (not in sunlight) Budgies love noise, leaving music,or a radio,or even television would help.Reall y hope you manage to sort it out,as a budgie lover and owner of many budgies, I know how worrying it all can be. Good luck.

Budgies do NOT hate eachother. That is sheer bulls**t. My parents had a perpetual pair for YEARS. And yes, there is a very good chance it would become more involved with the new friend. The trick IS... to get a new friend of the opposite sex. And no, they won't mate and lay eggs... not unless you get a breading box. And by the way, y'all... a Budgie is what everybody calls a parakete. they look exactly LIKE a 'kete, but are noticeably smaller.

Yes it will changeyour relationship with your budgie if you get another.

Heres what you should do

Provide your budgie with lots of toys, shew toys plastic toys and toys that make noise.

Also yurn on the radio or tv when you leave for work or school, or are on a date, well you get the idea

Tell your bird where your going and how long you will be gone.

These steps worked with my lovebird, he was alone all day when I was at school, we just turn on the tv or radio and he's fine.

If you still want to get another budgie house them in separate cages, and treat them as individuals

Remember only get another bird IFYOU WANT ANOTHER BIRD, dont get it as a companion for your bird unless breeding is th edesired result.

Best Of Luck Joe

it could be a strong concept to get him yet another budgie. merely imagine about what i am going to assert: Now i'm merely keeping this, nicely, enable's pretend that you stay in an orphanage, and also you had lot's of acquaintances that you performed with. Then sometime, someone got here alongside and dragged you far out of your acquaintances and took you to an weird and wonderful new position without one which you knew. that's probable how your parakeet feels on the instantaneous. He probable would not see the experience in staying unsleeping, there is not any one to envision with.

it might change if they share a cage you might want to let the new budgie get used to you and let it get attached before showing it to the other budgie.
