I read recently that the phrase 'One Nation Under God' was introduced during the Cold War to differentiate between Communisim and the American ideal. Is it still a common belief that Atheism contradicts American values, or is Atheism simply being branded as negative because of its political stigma?

I am not threatened by Atheism and I am a very proud Christian American who would give you the shirt off my back. Do I agree with Atheism? No. But I have decided to live and let live. When and IF they ever want to except Jesus as their Savior...I'll be the first in line to help, but I will not slander them and I will not judge them...for as a Christian I have learned that there is only ONE judge...and I ain't him.

It does not make a difference. The phrase 'One nation under God', was a propaganda tool from the get go. The purpose it served, was to convince those susceptable to such tactics, that the U.S. somehow has(had), God's approval and support. They obviously(obliviously), never took into account the scriptures at Daniel 2 :44 “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite; 45 forasmuch as you beheld that out of the mountain a stone was cut not by hands, and [that] it crushed the iron, the copper, the molded clay, the silver and the gold. The grand God himself has made known to the king what is to occur after this. And the dream is reliable, and the interpretation of it is trustworthy.
This prophecy for the time of the end, (read the rest of it Dan.2:1-44.), does not indicate that any man made kingdom,(nation), will be spared the destuction and ultimate replacement by God's Kingdom.
Those that dream that the U.S. was ever concerned about what Gods' requirements are, have only to look at the motives of it's founders. Landowners and businessmen. The only thing they were concerned with was not paying taxes. Strange how now that they are in control, they still pay minimal/no taxes, yet think little of manipulating the marketplace and tax rates to continually
steal from the working class.
Fortunately, God will, as it says at Daniel 2, call them to account for their unbridled greed and corruption.
Atheism and Christianity are two viewpoints manipulated by the powers that be to get emotional and/or distracted by debate, so as to waste their collective energy fight while both sides are ripped off.
Other instances of this tactic: Immigration.Gay marriage.

Communism is inherently sided with atheism, as per Marx's writtings. Naturally, when you have a opposing ideal, you'll want to distinguish yourself in the most absolute way. However, communism was never entirely the opposite of American values. (Some opposites do exist, but that's a different argument.) Atheism, having had been associated with various "anti-American" ideals (not just Communism, but it goes back to colonial times and with Native American religion), does have a bad rap, but given the secular basis of our constitutional government, it is not a threat any more than theistic ideals.

The main reason people came to America from England because England had no religious freedom. There was one choice...Anglican or as we know it Episcopalian. We in America have the freedom to have any religion we want or EVERYBODY LISTEN UP......NO RELIGION AT ALL!!!!! This is America supposedly the land of the free, this religion c*** was never an issue the way it has become in the last 6 years. You can be an American and have values, be a good person and EVERYBODY LISTEN UP....BE AN ATHEIST

I don't believe so. In the Real "American Way of Life", Religion and Spirituality are practiced for about an hour a week in church, and are left there in the cloak room, and then everyone goes out and does whatever they find expedient to do, anyway.

In real life, hardly anyone really acts like their religion says they are supposed to.
Actually, Atheists are probably more consitently reliable and logical, since they have to forge a private and public morality for themselves, which they can and do live with.

Atheism does not threaten the American way of life. Aside from economic profit, people came to the United states seeking not a Christian way of life, but religious freedom, first and foremost.

Atheism is a form of religious freedom.

Atheism isn't a threat to the Ameican way of life of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in the least. It is a threat to those who think this nation was founded on Christian principles. I guess some religious zealots approve of murdering and stealing all the land of the original occupants.

Communists that believed in God weren't allowed to worship God.

The only things (concerning religion at least) that would threaten the American way of life would be to a) attempt to force people to worship God if they didn't choose to or b) to tell people they can't worship God if they believe in him.

Freedom FROM religion is every bit as important to the American ideal as freedom OF religion.

No, it doesn't. The American way of life threatens atheism.

Atheism is a threat to any nation because no nation can stand without God.

As America gradually rejects God, we usher in our own fall.
