I'm gonna have to be judgmental on this question...but since Jesus went after the Pharisee who should have known better but just didn't get it and didn't care to get the message, I feel it's okay to call Fred the Pharisee and false prophet that he is.
Fred Phelps sadly does not understand the Bible and God will judge him for his actions. Oh Fred is very well read, but doesn't understand the concept and the meaning behind the words in the scriptures. To me, he's a big bad troll. Pretending to be a Christian and giving Christians a bad name to turn people against God.
Just so you know, the vast majority of Christians I know do NOT agree with Fred Phelps and are mortified that he would suggest protesting funerals for military people. What he preaches is not even close to what God is really saying in the Bible.
You see, Fred Phelps loves the media attention and will continue to do what he is doing as long as he can get attention. Those types of people are best ignored. Sending messages to him to stop are sadly a waste of time.
As far as what I do, I have prayed for him and if he ever comes to my town and I'm aware of it, I hope I can be standing across the road from him singing a song about God's love for everyone and smiling at Pharisee Fred. Probably with a sign stating that God loves even you, Fred. He's just mighty disappointed in you that you just don't get it.

My opinion of Fred Phelps is not very Christian-like, so I'll refrain from expressing it. Suffice it to say I think people like him turn more people away from Christ than they ever turn towards Him. I think love thy neighbor means just that...love them even if you do not agree with everything they do. Homosexuals are born that way, I have a hard time believing God would hate them when I don't think He would hate someone that was born with, say, epilepsy or only one arm. God will deal with Phelps come his judgement day for spouting so much hate.

Fred Phelps is actually a very good Christian in that he follows the Bible exactly, word for word. At least, he follows the parts of it that he likes.
Then again, that's what most Christians do.

Religious people (regardless if they are right or wrong) are the hardest to get through to. Look at the trouble between the Catholic and other churches today. We will probably never settle our differences.
Fred Phelps is a ignorant zealot. That means he has a lot of horsepower but no knowledge.

Fred Phelps what can I say, again I am a Christian and do not like to judge for Matthew chapter 7 verse 1 & 2 says: 1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you

Love thy neighbor does not = God hates fags. I believe the Bible says,A man will not lie down with another man as with a woman for it is an abomination. Could that be a reference to same sex marriages rather than sex?

I think his little ministry thing is just a sham. I think Republicans and their powerful religious right backers can use him to stir up the base allowing Republicans to also have a scapegoat. A republican candidate can say Fred Phelps is a fundamentalist nut without offending the moderate Republican voters. It also allows Republicans to look quite tolerant because they can say "we chastised this nut" because "we love homosexuals, we just want to ban homosexual marriage."

Based on the behavior of some other Christians and the teachings of the Old Testament, yes.
Based on the teachings of Jesus, not even.
He's the best example of the dangers of fundamentalism out there though.
