I think this law affects more RESPONSIBLE pet guardians than it does to protect those at risk by stupid individuals that use their canines in an inappropriate way.

My opinion on this type of misuse of legislative power is as follows:

Dog control problems are people problems, and are not limited to any given breed or mix.

Banning a breed or declaring it inherently vicious punishes those responsible dog owners who are the type of citizens that communities need to keep, not drive away.

Communities that have instituted such bans often find that the irresponsible owners and the criminals who use dogs for illegal purposes simply switch to another breed.

Banning a breed or particular mix of breeds punishes those dogs that are reliable community citizens, therapy dogs, assistance dogs for handicapped owners, search and rescue dogs, drug-sniffing dogs, police dogs, etc., and drives them out of the community.

Breeds and mixes are often difficult to identify.

I think breed specific laws are useless. Anyone who watches Animal Planet Heroes on a regular basis can tell you that the Pitts, Rotties, Dobies, Chows, German Shepherds, etc that they rescue for the most part end up being great pets and wonderful new family members. These are dogs that suffered extremely at the hands of their former owners and still when placed in a loving home, learn to trust and love people again.

The laws are targeted at banning or placing extreme requirements on the owners of certain breeds in hopes that people will choose to not keep them as pets. Lawmakers need to realize that it is not the PET DOGS that are the problem, but rather the dogs raised for fight rings, etc that cause the most problems and injuries. These dogs are owned by criminals. Do you think they care or give a flip about breed specific laws? The answer is NOOOOO!

Lawmakers need to give the responsible pet owners a break and stop passing breed specific laws and bans. They don't work, the criminals don't care one bit about the laws and that who is causing the majority of the problems.

I say stop the breed bans, and instead require that ALL dogs no matter what the breed or mix pass a test similar to the Canine Good Citizen Test. This would ensure that people's dogs were well behaved citizens no matter what the breed, and would make owners spend time training their pets proper social behavior and obedience.

Owners of "personal protection" trainined or "property guard" trainined dogs could apply for a "special permit" that would require the owners or handlers to demonstrate the ability to control and contain the dog for the safety of the general public. Police dogs are required to pass certification every year, why should the personal protection or property guard dog not have to be "certified" by some agency as well?

That is my 2 cents worth on the issue of breed specific laws.

bsl is wrong every dog should not be punished for the actions of others.thats like saying we should kill all people who live in poverty because they create gangs that can be dangerous.
