Was your dog housebroken before? It's likely that with all the attention paid elsewhere, he peed on the carpet a few times because nobody let him out. Then, when he smelled the carpet where he'd already peed, he kept going there.
You can retrain your dog, but it will take patience and attention and kindness. No yelling at him or hitting him, because that will make him more nervous.
And if he's nervous and pees on the carpet out of nerves, that's because something's scaring him. And don't forget, if your dog was close to your husband, he'll mourn, too. Humans aren't the only ones who mourn a loss.
If you don't want to keep him, call your local no-kill shelter or, if he's a purebred or close to it, a rescue organization. You can find one on petfinder.com.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you have a great support system within your family and friends. May you find peace and comfort within your heart soon.

Please don't get rid of him because he may feel totally abandoned then! Sometimes our pets seems to feed off the vibes that are coming off of us. So, maybe you should seek some grief counseling or something of that nature, ya know, not only would that do you good, but your dog could benefit from it as well.

Again, I'm truly sorry for your loss.

If you have any repect/love for your late(?) husband give it all to the dog. He really needs walks and love right now, as I suspect you do as well. Take care with yourself and confide in a real friend not just a Yahoo pal xx

Sounds like your pet is grieving. Maybe he just needs some extra attention from you. If you must get rid of him, ask around to all your family, friends & neighbors if anyone wants him. Or place a "free dog" ad in your local newspaper.

I am very sorry about your husband. My condolences. About the dog, you might want to take it to the ASPCA, I believe they take in unwanted pets and care for them quite well. Good Luck!
