Goliath, a philistine warrior, who is described as a "champion" in the Biblical text, positioned himself between the two armies and challenged the Israelites to send out a warrior to challenge him.

Some scholars believe he was a by product of the "Sons of God" in the Hebrew that is "Ben 'elohiym" aka Angelic being that had sex with human women which bore Half angelic and half Human children; Nephilim. Though almost all were wiped out during the flood, it is believed that Goliath was one of these.

Gen 6:4, The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore {children} to them. Those were the mighty men who {were} of old, men of renown

he was called that as he was considered a giant. david killed him with a stone. there was on the history channel a few years back that stated he wasn't the giant as we thought. he was actually about 6 foot three. as in many cultures and tribes, genetics create tall people. everyone was small in height in those times. a fluke in nature made in tall so he was thought to be a giant, just like people we have today. the korean basketball player is over 7 feet tall when they are normally very short people. anyone over 7 feet is considered a giant to us as the wrestler andre the giant.
