Our clinic prescribes 25 mg benedryl for anxiety all the time. You can start out giving the reccomended dose twice daily, but (upon vet's approval) you can give it up to 3 times daily. Anything more than that you should just call your vet and get a mild sedative, such as acepromazine or diazepam (valium). You do want to give it about 90 minutes before you know activities like a storm or fireworks will start however.
And you're correct that the younger one could be learning this behavior from your older one. There are several books and webisites that you can visit to learn how to train her not to be upset by these noises.
Lastly, I dont think that 1) your vet would call in an RX for xanax just for storm anxiety or 2) itd be a safe option for your dogs.

Benadryl is normally given to a dog for allergies. It does give a bit of a sedating affect but it is not normally given for anxiety. If you live in a house, I take my dog down to the basement and keep the music fairly loud. If my dog hears a loud noise I try not to coddle her because apparently it encourages them by telling them that their fear is okay. Try to distract them as much as possible and keep other sound louder. It a pain in the *** the firework going all the time though. To bad the people that set fire works ALL YEAR LONG didn't donate to a worthwhile cause rather them sending their money up in flames. With all the disaster of late, it is very sad. Don't get me wrong I understand celebrating holidays, but all year. Wow! If you can afford to go I would think your Vet would have a drug that is more appropriate. Best of Luck!

Actually, contrary to what most people have said here, Benadry (or Diphenhydramine)l is commonly used to treat allergic reactions in dogs. The vet prescribed it for my dog after he got hives...just regular Benedryl made for people. However, i would double check with your vet for how much to give her. It won't put her to sleep, but it will likely make her sleepy and might help to calm her down. Turn on a stereo, try to drown out the noise, Don't coddle her....if you do, you'll only reinforce her fear. Just ignore her and she'll get over it.

It might be better to have your vet call in a script for Alprazolam (Xanax) for your dog. They have it at human pharmacies, so you won't have to go in to the vet to buy it. It works much better than Beneryl without the sleepiness. Give about 1 hr. before the fireworks start.

Benadryl is an antihistamine which is used for allergies not anxiety. That's is also a larger dose of benadryl than you give a human. Where did you get this info?

Yes, Benedryl is one of VERY FEW HUMAN medicines that can be given to dogs... I gave my dog one pill in the morning and one in the evening because (due to) lung coughing, etc. It can also be given to quell anxiety.. one in the morning and one in the evening for a couple of days.

You should only give it every 12 hours. For example..a 10lb dog can get 3cc/ml twice a day but no more than that...they are not like humans.

There are far better meds for anxirty for your dog.
Benedryl is great for allergies and can make them sleepy but is not all that great for anxiety.
Speak with your vet and ask about things for specifically that becasue there are things that work much better.
