Plagerism is when you steal an author's literary work and present it as your own. You are also guilty of copyright infringement. When it comes to art, you may not copy the work and use it. That too falls into the realm of copyright infringement. It doesn't matter if you profit or not. And if you buy a painting from an artist, you don't own the right to reproduce it in any way, shape, or form. It's tabu and against the law.
Why don't you create your own painting in your own blog?

I think that it could depend on who owns the copyright to the particular painting. It may be a famous painting but depending on how you use it may not be against any laws. It is NOT plagerism unless you present a painting as your own work knowing full well that it is not. The origial question asks "if you use a famous painting....in your blog and do not ......." and here is where it gets vague but I think the person asking means if you do not give the artists a credit by saying .....painting by L. Da Vinci. .......anyhow that would not constitute plagerism at all EXCEPT if I told everyone I had painted it and then again I still doubt it would until I tried to profit by it.

Well, finally a decent question !,....The fact is,....some paintings are copyrighted......but this doesnt mean you cant use them in a blog. most famous paintings are in what is know as the"public domain"...these are mostly old paintings, cartoons or other works of art that are already known such as the "mona lisa".....public domain is not well defined but, you can comfortably assume that if soemthing has been public for 20 years or more, then you can use it....truely though, you will not get in too much trouble for using any picture as long as you are not defaming soemone in the process....."maplethorp comes to mind here"...offensive materials can get you in trouble, for instance, if you were to publish a picture of george bush peeing on an american or iraqi flag,...that might get you in trouble especially if that picture was made up on a computer or pasted together.
