I read a prophetical statement about a companion to prophet Muhammed who was married to a woman and one night his wife was chatting with him and she opposed prophet Muhammed. The man tried to stop her but she did not stop, then he KILLED her. The next morning he told the story to prophet Muhammed and prophet Muhammed praised him for what he had done and told him that the woman desrved to be KILLED.

The above statement was narrated by Abu Dawood [3795] and also by Nisai'ee. That statement was a vital source used by Ibn taimia to justify that anyone who opposed prophet Muhammed should be killed.

My question is:
Should someone be killed JUST for opposing prophet Muhammed? especially that it was a private conversation with her husband.

Also, did that man produce any evidence to support what he'd said? does not this give a licence for anyone to kill his wife and pretend that she opposed prophet Muhammed?

In their time, opposing means you are part of a conspiracy to kill a figure. And that was a mistake made by that woman, confiding to her husband whom she thought would conspire with her. There were many enemies that infiltrated the prophets camp. In fact, the prophet died an untimely death because of being food poisoned by one of his wives groups. So, the killing was for a just cause.
There is a similar true story in the ancient history of China. There was this princess,a daughter of the emperor, married to a well known military figure. She then heard that her husband was conniving with some group to assassinate the emperor. Her beloved husband told her this for political reasons, increasing their domain, and they be the rulers. Confused, the princess consulted trusted sages, the advice,"parents is like the trunk of a tree, the children its branches, cutting the trunk will destroy all the branches. As for spouses, it is like a garment, it can be replaced unlike a parent. So, the princess informed the plan to the emperor and her husband was executed.
Wouldn't you do the same if your spouse confided to you that they will fly a jetliner and crash it at the white house or any inhabited places and they really have the capability?

no and in Islam Women have more rights than men people from the outside looking in make all of these assumptions if you look at all of our doctrine you'll see women have more rights and islam says that you are not allowed to kill a life god has made sacred. which is human life now having said that some muslims have and do kill they do not represent the whole of islam just like all those catholic preist that molest all those children they dont represent the whole of christianity

It's not even questioned! Every man has total and complete dominion over his wife in these Muslim countries! Women over there are merely a convenience for sex and raising children only! A husband may treat his wife any way he wants... (including killing her if he wants to!). The women have NO rights whatsoever - NONE!

being an english woman coming from a non religious background, I was very ignorant to Islam and its culture and I had so many misconceptions about it. Since becoming a revert to Islam from being Roman Catholic I have realised that Islam is the only religion that gives me guidance in every aspect of life. What you have read or heard is another misconception. Killing is totally forbidden in Islam. in the Quran it states 'Killing someone is like killing the whole of makind, and saving someone is like saving the whole of mankind.'

People have been killing other people for being witches and heretics (i.e. opposing your choice of holy man / idea du jour) all the time. It's what happens when loons have too much free time and nothing to do.

My dear friend, are you really that much hate against Islam that you would even use non authentic Hadiths to bash Islam?
