I started having questions about the church when I took a course in comparative religions. I was about 20 years old. I began a mentor relationship with a professor of alternative religions, 30(can you imagine) years ago. I became a polytheist, an eclectic Pagan. Atheism isn't appealing, I need some gods.

I have been 'saved' from dogma and programming, well, since birth...
Guess I was fortunate enough to have folks who decided from the start that religion was for adults, and it's WRONG to fill an impressionable little kids head with cotton wool in the form of pre-concieved spiritual notions.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying I have no spiritual nature - I'm just saying my folks were right in letting us develop into adults unfettered by the opinions of others.
My sister and i both grew up happy and healthy, and each reached a point where we began to think bigger, and were at least able to make our own decisions.
I'll be a carbon copy of no mans' ideals!

Raised Presbyterian and coverted to Baptist at age 15. Quit church at 18 years and then by 21 years after studies in psychology, philosophy and world history determined that Christianity was based on false premises. I called myself an atheist for several years, then agnostic. Now I am into New Age religious belief.

-In my opinion, atheists are wrong about everything. I am a Christian.
-so you started smoking weed at 17....well i don't think i want to smoke ever,,,,
-Atheism is a Religion. It is a system of spiritual beliefs.
Atheists worship at the Altar of Self, arrogant and prideful enough to think there is no one greater than themselves!
(quoted from above answers)

I became an atheist as soon as I understood the nature of religion and the religious. As Gandhi once said " I like your Christ, but I do not like your Christians, as they are so unlike your Christ".

I am unable to believe that one can devote themselves to God but remain as coarse and hateful as ever. For theists to actually believe that they will be rewarded with eternal happiness and bliss in the afterlife because they prayed for petty things and refrained from sleeping around astounds me. To not question ones beliefs and surroundings shows ignorance and stupidity, not faith.

I'm sixteen. I was not raised in a religious context, and was taught to think for myself. I've been an atheist since forever, I guess. And I learned I was an atheist when I learned religion existed, at age seven, or something like that.

Born free, and I'll die free of theism.

That's a tough one. I never really believed. My parents tried to instill some religion in me when I was about ten. We went to the Unitarian church three times. When the fourth Sunday rolled around I said I wasn't going. My mom got a little mad, but let me stay home. They went, returned, and never went back.

I told people I was agnostic through middle-school into high-school. I've probably been embracing hard-line atheism since I was about seventeen. I'm twenty-nine now.
