From all reports I've read, the Channel Master 4228 is the best antenna for distant reception. It is not too big and reasonable in cost. If you are in a very weak signal area you may need a more sophisticated multi-element Yagi (I don't remember the manufacturer) which is very expensive. If you are in a moderate signal area (10-30 miles from transmiiter) you can get by with a CM4224. For more information check this out:

Really HDTV antennas don't exist. HDTV is a type of format displayed on your TV screen. The signal that provides HDTV to your receiver is called a digital signal. Digital signals will and are being broadcast on the same frequencies as the analog signals we have used for years. The only difference is analog signal use radio waves to bring you the pictures and sound as digital uses 0's and 1's like a computer. The antenna that worked good for analog signal at a particular location will also work good for a digital signal. Many people believe that all digital signals will be broadcast on UHF (14-69), not true! The reason many are broadcasting on UHF now is the VHF is currently being used by the analog signals. On February 17th 2009 the analog signals will be turned off in the U.S. At this time many broadcasters will begin broadcasting their digital signals on VHF (2-13). The FCC offers a site called final channel destination at http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-05-1743A2.pdf This site can help you determine if the digital channels in your area will be VHF or UHF or both. The Consumers Electronics Association offers a site http://antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx for help determining what antenna is best for your location.
