He is 36. And since he told me he has either totally avoided me or has been acting strange. I told him that I loved him too. He suffers from mild depression, I thought that might be a part of it. Why is he doing this?

There is no telling. He is a guy.. can't expect that much from them :) ... I know someone else who went through the same thing and his reason as to why he was treating his girlfriend that way was he thought that she would leave him and that now that she knew how he really felt that maybe she would think she was better then him. Just talk to him and be open and honest and try. Thats all you can do.

Who really knows. You need to approach him and discuss how a person can tell someone that they love them and then w/draw from that person. All you need to do is ask, not interrogation style, but gently. If he cannot look you in the face or does not supply a substantial answer, then you need to leave him alone and move on. You know that there is always the possibility that there is someone better out there for you.

Maybe he has had second thoughts. Maybe he felt your "I love you too" response wasn't real. You don't say how old you are, but if you are very young, maybe he now thinks he is too old for you. Actually, I have no idea, nor will anyone else. So it is best that you just ask him, WHAT'S UP? Good luck.

I think it's because u r cathing him, leave him a space coz a guy is an elastic belt and u r one of it's ends, he is avoiding u now , so let him stretch the belt and he will get back strongly. but I don mean leave him completely, just be quite and tolerant.

I think it's because he might feel weird around you: some people are like that. Just like if your somebody's best friend and then you start dating, you act different around each other.

Perhaps he's wondering if he made the right decision...but i think he's just scared. dont push him now. just wait for him to work out all that emotion. Guys are bad in this dept and we need time for instances like this

He's not sure of himself and feels he's gone too far, too fast. Be sure he knows how you feel, but give him some space, too. It may go further or not. His depression may be stronger thn he lets on.
