It's quite common in canines to have the tendancy to chew their paws. In some cases, the dog may have some sort of thorn or sticker stuck within the padding of his/her paw. In such situations, veterinary assistance or perhaps tweezers are the best approach. However, the dog may have nerve endings that cause discomfort, only attempting to ease the pain. You must consider this: has it happened before?

It could be some type of allergy as dogs try to ease itching by chewing on the spots. A friend has a dog who was bald in many places because he had chewed those places so much. Turned out that he was allergic to grass.

Dogs will sometimes chew on their paws when they itch. Maybe he has fleas or ticks or is allergic to something.

Dander-ruff......sorry a bit of pet humor......both paws?.....could be fleas....check....spread the fur for those lil bugger....woofie will object of course.Be a bit firm if you have to.....while your checking look for cuts/red spots like rash/dry skin......might as well as your at it.
Fleas (treat it with spray) ... cuts.....leave them be but check in a few days for infection(redness...pus etc..)..... The rash/dry skin could be caused by something like gasoline or oil from puddles or chemicals. Grab a scrub brush and mild soap if animal soap not available...scrub the area affected up to where leg joins body..
All else fails?.....vet time! P.S.....keep a small journal of what you do to the animal including date/time and comments and additional details you may notice...like loss of fur.......can show vet what you have been doing so as to better assess.

Take your dog to the vet and find out what is wrong. Don't wait until you have even more problems.

he may just be cleaning them. If you don't see any irritation on the paws then I wouldn't worry about it too much.
