There isn't a healthier substitute really. Most margarines are made from partially-hydrogenated vegetable oil, and that is worse healthwise than butter. If you can find a spread that contains hydrogenated oil, not partially, then that is your best bet. To be honest, I've yet to find one in my grocery store that doesn't taste like dog hair, lol. Butter on the whole has less trans fats and so I believe it to still be the healthier option, when consumed in moderation.

Answerer # 1 has the best alternatives. Since butter is derived from animal fats (saturated) pretty much any margarine or spread will be healthier.

To be totally honest, real butter is the best, it has been shown that all the margarine products contain too many additives...all natural actually is better...just watch the consumption..

Anything with hydrogenated oils are worse than butter. Don't be fooled by advertising.....read the label. For cooked veggies, try butter buds. They are great.
