My daughter, 16, has a talent for writing...but she wants to be a teacher as a backup until that career takes off.
I think it is important to encourage your children to be the best they can be at everything in life. If they have a talent...emphasize that.
They are young yet and will change their minds a thousand times before they graduate.
Encourage graduation and college along with backing them in whatever career field they choose as it is important that "they" enjoy their career regardless of what we as parents want for them.
High school and college graduation a must! Career field should not be "forced", but openly discussed and encouraged.
Good luck and let them know you are behind them whatever they choose as their career field....excluding bum, etc...lol

Don't you think the choice should be up to your child. I think to many parents pressure kids into a career that the child has no intros in. Stop trying to live your life through your child. Being a parent of a 12 year old myself, I believe it is best to let them choose the path and you just be there to advise and help guide. Have Faith that you are doing a good job in raising them so they will make the right and best decision for themselves.

I think it's up to the child to decide what they want to be. My father was an engineer at Procter and Gamble for nearly 30 years, working first in paper and then in soap. My mother works in health administration. I, 14, want to be a research doctor or a genetic engineer, while my sister who is almost 16 wants work in business administration or business law.
It's fine to want your kids to be something. Just don't push them too hard, especially if they decide to be something else.

For some reason while I was pregnant with my now 10 month old I wanted him to be an artist. Considering his current personality I'm not so sure that's the way to go. He'll probably be some sort of engineer.

a good profession for your kids would be one that they enjoy doing and make enough money out of it to live a decent life - so if I had any children I'd leave them to choose what they want to do with their lives

Although I encourage my children toward a higher education, and toward activities that they are interested in, I will leave their choice of vocation up to them

Shouldn't the children be planning their future instead?

Engineering (or architecture)
Medicine
Law
Business (only if they plan on starting or buying their own business)
Anything else is a waste

Anything she wants to be....as long as she does her best. It is more important that she works to live rather than if she lives to work.
