I am a US citizen that has moved to Canada. I married a Canadian citizen in January and immigration says that I have to wait until October or November to get my Canadian worker permit. I want to stay in Canada with my husband - is there any way to guarantee this or speed up the process of immigrating into Canada?

I married a man from the US and we are having the same problem. What type of paperwork did you submit? Spousal sponsorship I am assuming since you are married? Did you include an Open Work permit with your application? That allows you to work with any employer. An open work permit also extends your stay in Canada, as your passport only allows you to stay upto 6months. The open work permit is the only permit that is allowed to be submitted with the Spousal sponsorship. You can look for a job though.... found this out as well. If you find an employer that is willing to do a labour assessment on your behalf, it can be sent away for a confirmation. Once you get the confirmation you can apply for a work visa, but it has to be applied for out of the US. In other words the closest immigration office...example Buffalo, NY send it there and then you will get your work visa within a month or so.

Obviously you are also doing paperwork from within Canada so that takes twice as long just to find out if you can stay. If you were staying in the US and submitting the paperwork that way apparently it is suppose to take less time. But they don't tell you either way, what ever you are willing to live with is what they told me. No way to have a marriage as far as I am concerned.

Unfortunately there is no quick way to speed the process up, if you call CIC constantly to find out the status of your application it can hurt your processing time. These things take time and time is what you have alot of right now. My husband isn't really pleased at not being able to work right now either, but he would rather be with me then in the US.

It will come soon enough, then you will be able to work. Hope I have given you some type of Help.

Sounds like the Canadians are getting a little tired of American's moving to Canada for hopes of cultural upgrade.

I hope for one that Canadians are not losing their ability to separate us, the people, from our leadership and it's behavior.

This may be the reason for the delay in approving your work permit. I suggest you go to the actual, "decision maker" and sit in the outer office until they can see you in person and realize you are not the "Ugly American". Good Luck

The process is time-consuming and there is no way to speed up the process. There are companies out there who claim they can shorten the time-frame of the immigration process, but for the most part they are scams.

With that said, you can make sure your application does not take longer by completing all the information properly, and clearly.

Well now that 911 has occured and the USA is blaming Canada's lax immigration laws for terrorists entering the US we have tightened up on who gets in and who doesn't.You will have to wait a bit but remember you are about to live in the Greatest country in the world so it is worth it.Funny the U.S. blames Canada for the terrorists but they are the ones who let them in,go figure.

i'm on an same boat... we are getting married in August and we were advised it's going to be 5 - 16 months. i am hoping someone will submit something functional for us! We were making plans to have somewhat one even as he receives right here... Does it help if we get pregnant this summer season? the in person-friendly words element i visit inform you is that there is something observed as a Provincial Nominee application, i imagine. in case your husband is experienced in a section that's needed on your province, he can be conscious by this application and it apparently somewhat speeds issues up. merely look it up on google and also you may stumble on a lot of websites for each province... i'm out of robust ideas too besides the undeniable fact that! best of success!

Where the hell do you live that it is so tough? Here in the Metro Detroit area/Windsor Essex County they had out dual citizenship like candy even after 911.
