What I suggest you do is spend some time researching charity watchdogs. It is amazing that there are people who get paid to watch what charities do with money.
Personally I have been happy with companies who particpate with the Better Business Bureau.
So I highly recommend picking a charity off of:
http://www.give.org
and if you want something local http://www.charitynavigator.org offers a search engine for charities (inside of the US).
With starving kids (that is a global issue) there is always the local food bank (inside of the US) where you can actually donate food if you think your money will be wasted.

I am being totally honest when I say this. There are none !!!
You are much better off finding some one in your neighborhood and bring them a bag of groceries!!!
That is what I have been doing ever since I heard what the Red cross has done to the funds in California. Really bad...

Don't donate your money, it does not go where you think it is going. Do what I have done, go around and find some homeless people and families (they are everywhere) and take them to get some food, maybe get them a motel room, offer to help them, help themselves, make a difference, one at a time, really it will be well worth it.

Usually the best places to give to have the least recognition and the most need. Anywhere but you want to at least be sure there legit. Try somewhere close or in your community.

Episcopal Relief and Development (http://www.er-d.org/), which not only feeds the kids, but helps strengthen the community that raises them. No preaching at people, no threats of hell, just real love shown in effective action.
