Help, I just got my cat back from the vet yesterday. He has a broken pelvis and the vet wants to let it heal nauturally. My problem is I need any tips, or suggestions on a cat with using the litter box with broken hip. He is really having a painful time getting out of the litter box. The cat still hasn't had a bowel movement and when I pick him up to put him in the litter box he jumps out screaming in pain. When I brought him home from the vet yesterday afternoon he did pee in his litter box but nothing since.

He is eating, and drinking his normal amount. Please no negative comments or suggestions.

Thank you,

Your cat should be on a can food only diet to give him softer stools, if he doesn't have a BM soon you'll have to take him back to the vet for an enema. Your vet could have also suggested a safe stool softener and dosage instructions. You may have to change the litter box so he doesn't have to step over a wall to get in, I have used a dish drain.. set it on a towel to keep the litter off the carpet. And the vet could give you a pain medication like Metacam which is just put over the food every 3 days. It is okay to let the pelvis heal naturally but pain should be treated... and controlled!

Here is what you should do UNTIL the poor kitty gets better.. Your litter box is probably tooooooooooo high.. so get a cardboard box and cut the sides down to about 2 inches high.. no more... and put litter in it.. The kitty will not have to lift its legs up too high this way...

Call another vets office and ask them if this is proper procedure for a broken pelvis. It sure does not sound right to me. You can also call the local animal shelter and talk to someone there and get some advice. Take action right now your cat is really suffering!!!

Try using a pop flat or real short cardboard box as a litter box so that he doesn't have to step so high out of a regular litter box.

try a box that has low sides on it. besides that call the vet for some more suggestions. see about pain meds too.

Perhaps give the vet a call, to see if he/she has any suggestions for home-care for your cat. It's worth a shot.

try to somehow make it easier for him to get in/out of the litterbox... not sure how but maybe use a little ramp or even cut off one end so that he doesn't have to jump over the edge as much? really hope he heals fast!
