Some states list their offenders on their Department of Corrections websites. Usually, they will list what they were sentenced for, etc.

By asking family and friends of the convicted person..or as said searching through reams of news paper articles: as most cases that result in a custodial sentence are reported in the local media!!

In the UK.

Unless you are a member of a legitimate body.. i.e.Security company, Council: Social & Civil Service etc. and have 'Permission' from the person to seek a general or full disclosure search for vetting purposes... you have to the best of my knowledge, no right to obtain this information from any official sauces e.g. CRB check.

You can't becuase of the Data Protection Act in England. I work for the probation service and I know that this kind of information can not be giving out, mainly through fear of vigalante attacks when the person comes out of prison. I'm not saying i particularly agree with this so please don't everyone start shouting at me.

You cannot find out the reason for them being in jail unless for example their case was highlighted in the media then you can use a library. But generally in my experience it's very hard to find that information readily available to public.

Try Integra Scan:

It's not free, but I have a feeling it's worth the price if you find what you're looking for. Hope this helps.
