If it were true that the respective authorities are involved in the withholding of information concerning extra terrestrials, why do you think they want to do that?
Could they not just acknowledge the existence of such things? Do you think they are really in possession of extra terrestrial technology?

Thanks to all for the reply so far. But why would people panic? Isn't this the 21st century? Aren't the peoples in this world marture enough? Have the people in this world not seen enough of terrifying news in this world to take them within their stride?
For example, back in the good old days, my grandmother will be horiffied to hear the news of mass murders or violent robberies.
These things, however, my mother, who is now very old, just brush them aside. These are just too common place today. Even news on spacecrafts landing on other planets are just too pathetic to her these days. Nothing surprises her anymore.
So I cannot help but wonder will the people of this world really panic if they know alien life exists on other planets?

Why would the authorities want to withhold information on UFOs?
The truth is: they can't. The idea that our authorities could keep something like this secret is ridiculous - they couldn't keep the Department of Homeland Security secret investigation into terrorist finances secret, they couldn't keep the atomic bomb secret from the Russians *during* World War II (Stalin knew about it before Truman told him), and they couldn't keep UFOs secret either. People don't keep secrets: to think that is a mis-understanding of human nature. The most you can do is delay the information.
There is, however, a common 'archetype' that transcends cultures and languages - they all have a 'UFO' archetype (the UFO archetype is the symbol for the 'godhead' or the true self in each of us).
Understanding the psychological archetypes in humans would let you understand why there will always be UFOs, and why we will always want to believe they exist, and what function they serve: UFOs and aliens exist in our minds; the fulfill a role that is missing when 'god' is absent.

In light of the xenophobia of the average human, the announcement of the reality of UFOs could spark a panic that would destry civilization as we know it.

Like they said, panic. Also, if our government is using alien techgnology in weapon systems like stealth bombers, if other governments found out, it would be a war of a massive scale, esspecially if it was North Korea or something.
