If you get a thin one, taking forever to straighten is not necessarily true. If you get a high quality one that gets as hot as 300-400 degrees, then you will actually be spending LESS time on your hair. There aren't very many thicker/fatter ones that get that hot. And you're right about getting close to your scalp. The thin ones allow you to get closer to the roots so it will look more natural.
I really like Paul Mitchell smoothing iron, Chi's straightener and Sedu's flat irons.

I use an SCP MK 4 Wide plate Tourmaline hair straightener it has pure ceramic plates so it heats within 6-10 mins and its temperature can be set from the range of 80c-210c, I have curly frizzy hair too and it works fine on my hair.
For an SCP go to- www.hairstuffdirect.co.uk
The cost is far less then GHD. SCP MK4's are only £44.99 and SCP have a 14 day no quibble money back guarantee, so you can't lose.
p.s if you still struggle with straightening your hair after this, then you could buy a cheap straightener with thin plates, and an SCP straightener with wide plates.

fat. it takes less time to straighten. i use remington wet to straight but it works really good when you use it with dry hair. It used to take me like 2 hours to straighten my poofy hair but with this it only takes 30 minutes. to get the frizz out of the scalp, i use frizz-ease step 5. it works really good and smells really good. You just spread it by your scalp. hope this helps! :)

thin ones are good as the smaller surface area means they retain heat a lot better than wider plates which also can take longer to heat up. I have thin ones and my hair is really rebellious and i can do my hair in 30mins, they only cost me 30 quid- they're babyliss ones.also use a good heat-protection spray to tame frizz and lock in shine, i use the TRESemme one, its good and smells nice!
