The bible is a guide book for our lives. It spells out excatly what's going to happen to the earth when Christ comes again. By following what we are taught in the bible, it gives us a backbone. It's takes a strong person to make the decision to give their lives over to God. The choice is a very personal one and is something that can't be taken lightly. Only those with a backbone can make that decision because they have to honestly look at their lives to decide how the want to spend eternity. Because of everything that goes into be a true born again chrisitian, it's take an educated person to make that choice. By educated I don't mean what you can learn at school. The Bible is laid out for everyone to read and make a decision about. The educated ones, are the ones who read, consider all the facts and then make the decision, from what they've read, to live a spirit filled life. The uneducated people are the ones that aren't willing to open their minds to the possibilty that something more exists.

The nature of most people is to seek out truth of some kind, a means by which to lead their life that will give them solace and direction. This is not absolutely nescesary, rather this is an option oft reached through some kind of epiphany or long thought. There are of course individuals who are either convinced in youth of this being the right way, or are looking for an easy out to the more difficualt questions in life. As a basis of faith recquires that, 'faith', it can be said that the apparent ignorance in a person leading their life in accordance to a book is not much different than a person having faith that all of science and learning is omniscient and thus always correct. There are ignorant people who do not follow books and there is ignorance in the books, so therefore it is the decision of the individual to become educated and decide on their own.

Sometimes it is easier to get a book on certain subjects than to approach others on the subject, especially when you're quite likely to get rude comments or be judged.
And what is this "lack of backbone" supposed to mean? I don't know about others, but as far as I'm concerned, I do have a mind of my own and when I read self-help books, I do so in a way where I can simply use what will work for me and discard the rest. Also it is good to compare it to other books as no two self-help books are alike.

Because everyone who ever lived is different from everyone else. If not for an established law system and moral code of some kind, chaos would ensue with all the "free thinking" going around. If you are so intelligent, you would know better than to assume in your arrogance that those who live by their faith are spineless when the backbone of this country was based on that "book".

I think you may be partially right about the "No Backbone"!
I think people want another person to think for them so they dont have to make their own choices and therefore reap the outcome of that decision.
If you said, well Dr.Phil does it this way and then it turns out bad, then you could say shame on Dr.Phil instead of blaming yourself.
Our culture is like that- never take responsibility for own mistakes and choices!
However, I dont dismiss the value of these self help books bceiase they can truly help a person. But it needs to be a healthy balance of personal choice and of what you read. It is valuable wisdom passed on.

If you're referring to the Bible, you'd be surprised how many people claim to "live by the Bible" but have read almost none of it. So by my standards that's not letting a book tell you how to live your life. And even for people who do read it, why did they let somebody tell them to go by the Bible? Or any other book for that matter?
There comes a point in everyone's life when they must choose whether to decide for themselves or just follow what they are told. I think a lot of people go with the latter because they think they won't be responsible for their actions, since they were just doing what they were told. But they're wrong. You still made the decision to follow what you were told and you are responsible for any decision you make.

I was thinking the same thing! I was gonna say that no one thinks for themselves anymore.... I saw in your details that you said the same. Even collage.... People need to realize that by getting a collage degree... they haven't done anything extraordinary!!! they have simply retained information that someone else has figured out! Books are a great tool to use to model their lives, but they need to take that knowledge and apply it to how it is going to help them. They do it with the bible too. Here you have a book written a very long time ago in another language... Now it is being deciphered by schmoes who have gone out and got a license to preach.... Talk about the blind leading the naked!
(religious buffs: I already know that their are a lot of very educated folks in this business... so unless you just feel like typing... you don't need to inform me of this!)

Books are tools. People write everything from their ideas to their experiences, and from these we learn. It takes a lot of education to choose between thoughts and to understand we never stop learning. It takes a lot of backbone to accept a new idea, and the fact that they picked up a book is proof that they do think for themselves. If your mention of "a" book is referring to "The" book, then you must know how many lives it has influenced with its guidelines.

When God speaks only someone who is really stupid, or who's pride and academic intelligent gets in the way, doesn't sit up and pay attention. The bible is a guideline on morallity. Why do people let work rule their lives, parties rule their lives, alcohol and drugs rule their lives or an unbelief. Have they lost the ability to think for themselves and choose humility instead of pride?

Some are that uneducated, but for many, it is not about letting a book run your life, it is about agreeing with the message being taught, and making a conscious decision to live your life that way.
