Ok, I have no idea what Eric was talking about, but that sounds like a tea au lait, not americano. Americanos were actually invented in a NY Italian deli years ago by the owners who immagrated from Italy.

But HappyBidz and super fly are right; an americano is espresso in water; but add the shots to the water, not water to shots (espresso is quite delicate after it is extracted, so adding water on top or stirring quickly could damage the shot making it bitter).

An Americano is 2 shots of espresso watered down with 12 oz boiling water. You would need an espresso maker to make the espresso.
