They do have similarities in their teachings such as non-violence. The Buddha meditated and Jesus went to the mountain to regenerate. The Buddha taught outcasts and Jesus women, both of which were taboo at the time. They both fasted and were highly disciplined. Both taught chidren. Both taught radical teachings for their time. Posting any other similarities would be appreciated.

Kara M, as far as I know most Buddhists do not actually worship the Buddha but use his teachings and life model to help live their lives. I worship neither as even if either were god God neither needs nor requires our worship.

padminig, you are exactly right that Buddhism is not a religioun per say, but more of a philosophy. Maybe Buddha was focusing more on self actualization at the time and Jesus was more focused on the divine other. They are not mutally exclusive concepts. The Buddha at the time was reacting to religious legalisms hence sought a less religious pursuit to find truth.

wild-man of ..., maybe Jesus was the result of many lives culminating into a being that more closely resembled God. god in that the mirror of his soul through spiritual striving became highly polished.

"all of them may be one, father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us..." sounds an a lot like we can also attain like Christ, Christ Consciousness, i.e. by polishing the mirror of our souls.

It's thought that Jesus studied with some buddhists since his enlightened words paralled Buddhas, who said them first.

They aren't the same soul entity but reached a level of automatic thinking/reaction to events called the 'christ consciousness' level. If you've reached it, you know what I mean. It's due to your own evolution of your way of thinking, not an outside source.

It's sad to see so much ignorance concerning Buddha. Buddha was not a God, nor did he wish to worshiped. I do believe Buddha and Christ had very similar ideas though. If you read the book "Living Buddha, Living Christ" you will see how alike they were. Buddha lived and died long before Christ was born and who's to say he didn't get some of his teaching that way. In some ways I think maybe they do share one soul, as well as others who were trying to spread the word and limit human suffering. I, as a Buddhist, get more hate and anger and ignorance from so called Christians than any other religious group. One must remember that more people have died in the name of Christianity than all the wars put together. Sad, isn't it? I read the bible and the Lotus Sutra, I grew up on the front pew of a Southern Baptist Church and as an adult I have chosen the path of the Buddha. What I consider a non-fear based faith that is growing stronger every day.

maybe Buddha was trying to be Christlike. NO, they are not the same. A study showed that the chance of anyone fulfilling even 8 of the characteristics of the messiah in the old testament(and Jesus fulfilled 12 easily),the odds were like 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 or more. (You can go to amazingfacts.org to see the exact number.) Others can imitate Christ's life, and we all should try, but there is only one savior, and that is Jesus Christ.

Jesus and Buddha were certainly not the same soul entity. I suppose you believe in reincarnation. Your question would have a little phylosophy if the most important aspect about Jesus was his teaching. In that case you could argue He came back to teach us more.

But the most important aspect of Jesus was His death and resurrection. His taking the sinner's place in response to God's wrath. The Bible says if Jesus had not resurrected, our faith would have been in vain.

Jesus and Buddha are totally different..Christianity is a religion of faith. It emphasises Faith in God.. Buddhism is a different kind of religion,if you can call it a religion .It may be better described as a way of life.

The Jesus character might have it's roots in Buddha, but it seems more likely to have originated in Horus.

No,
Buddha was living human kind like you and me who made blunders with slip-ups and human errors on planet earth.
Jesus is just an analogy of our creator communicating with living human kind on planet earth.
Someone out there had missed the differences.
Never read properly who is communicating with living human kind on planet earth.
