Ok how shall I put this...
If you want your son to be helped you can't be legal and nobody is who learned...
You are talking pirate software as each of these is likely to start at £500 + maybe £1000+
Get your anti virus sky high that can handle rootkits... Forget Norton first.
You will ideally need a Mac no a PC or failing that Windows Profession XP PRO
AVID for video editing.
Adobe After Effects (the shockwave when a planet explodes)
For 3d Animation
*************************
Maya (actually alias the compnay that make it may give you a free student copy that prints not for commershal use all over but works)
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=6905396&siteID=123112
http://www.avid.co.uk/uk/
AVID Softimage (used in walking with dinosaurs)
Lightwave (Babylon 5)
3D Studio Max (3d Games)
***********
For graphic design Photoshop is a must , with In Design, Illustrator, Quark Xpress.
Also web design Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks and many others
Must of these have addons called Plug-ins often for just those effects...
***********************
Also this is really important... sonny boy will need excellent office politics skills and those industries are very much who you know and how well you can fit in with folk who maybe total ego jerks like the Orange phone adds in the cinemans or the bitchy types you see in reality TV.
If In the UK most media degresss are worthless... Contact Ravensbourne college in Kent. Thats where TV compnaies recruit from.
Also have him learn the Soho areas of London and covent Garden better then the couriors and taxi drivers...
Ie runner tape this tape to moulinare now hurry...
no number on the door in the streets its left of dinky dogs, round the mack of the orande brothel, through the alley, up the firescape and gree door on the right...
thats not an exageration...
Contact Avid for sutdent editions...
As said he needs to socialse, get out and deff get girlfriends. Nurds get nowhere.
Plus make him and expert of coffees like laites etc
And he will need to get fit for karting around equipment.
Getting jobs as a film extra should get him onto studios ... Try Casting Collective and Mad dog in London towards end of summer.
Electrical qualifications help...
Note never went near media stuidies...
If he wants in on animation he needs to understand how people move... dance lessons ?
or runner work with effects companies having learnt the above first...
3d Animation is hard.
For pyrotechnics ie explosives he would have to get an apprenticeship lasting years.
Art and design scupture courses may help.
If you know anyone going to thailand give them my shopping list above for the pirate stalls

If you want to be able to take the really cool photos - those crazy special effects images others just can't figure out - what I'm about to share
with you will blow your mind…
… in fact, you'll probably be a little annoyed that nobody told you this stuff before.
You see, there are a handful of simple, easy techniques that can totally transform how you use and view your camera - and they're so quick to
grasp, they'll make a difference for you the very next time you snap a picture.

Well... without using Windows Movie Maker ther is a restreiction unles you are willing to oay serious cash... But I can suggest www.download.com. That may have a prgram (it IS a legal site) that can help, and you can download it for free, trial, full, or some limitations are sometimes in place though. Have you got windows Media Player version 9/10 or higher? that comes with a very good Windows Movie Maker Package full fo special effects... liek transitions, fades, blends, coloring, speeds, etc.
