The tongue is referred to as the "magic mirror" - it is part of and a reflection of what's going on with the rest of our 30 foot food tube. Your friend needs to do a juice fast and her tongue will get cleaner as her food tube gets cleaner.
As a Wellness Consultant, one of the first questions I ask my clients after they get started on a juice fast is - Do you have a white coat on your tongue? - and most of them say yes. Almost everyone gets a coated tongue on a juice fast because almost everyone is toxic and the juice fast helps get rid of those toxins.

Its bacteria or thrush, lots of people get it. The reason why the doom monger before says its a symptom of HIV is because HIV + people get terrible thrush, but much worse than just a coated tongue.
Your friend can invest in a tongue scraper. She can also gently clean her tongue with a toothbrush and a dab of paste, rinse and repeat. Then finish with that new clove flavoured mouthwash, the name has slipped my mind. (its alcohol free, you see the results in the sink).
It can be caused by digestive upsets but most doctors will just tell her to clean her tongue. She might try cutting back on dairy and soya for 4 weeks to see if that helps.

This is natural. Whilst most people clean their teeth few realise you should also clean your tongue.
Use a different toothbrush to the one you use on your teeth as you do not want toothpaste residue on it which may make you feel sick.
Run the brush under cold water and then gently move the brush back and forward on your tongue and in circular motions. rinse it several times whilst carrying this out. Brush the back of your tongue but do not push the brush so far back it makes you want to be sick. This should be done in the morning and before going to bed.
Done in the morning it works in getting rid of that stale mouth feeling and will get rid of any catarrh build up as well.

It sounds like thrush. It's caused by Candidiasis, Moniliasis, or yeast infection. It is very easily treated with antibiotics.

Ok I have to because only I would think of this, does she smoke pot? could be "cotton mouth" AKA dry mouth from that. Certainly worth getting it checked out though.

Does she brush her teeth? Tell her to brush her tongue also. Doing that should help get rid of it. If it doesn't, she should see her dentist or doctor.
