My dog is pretty smart. She can swim and save people when they're struggling to get out of the water. But now she just won't listen to me. My dad wants her to bark at strangers. That's all he asks. She's too friendly. For example: Strangers come by. She does nothing but jump on them and give big kisses. How do I train her to do that one little thing???

I want my dog to bark at strangers, like a watch dog. I know that it's not in her nature cuz golden retrievers are like super friendly. I just want her to so she knows the difference from a stranger and a friend. I don't want her kissing burgulars and letting them in scot - free. I don't want her to be too aggressive, just enough to let us know that someone is coming.

Ok, I tried barking with her, she looks at me dumbly. I can see it in her eyes that says, " Gee, WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO. I don't want to get caught with you " and she runs away

first you have a golden retriever..not exactly the "guard dog" kind of dog. Golden's are breed to be sociable, friendly, lovable dogs.
perhaps a dog training school...one that teaches "guard dog" type behavior.
id be really careful though...you don't want her becoming aggressive.
try your local obedience school, ask them if they have any suggestions for this specific behavior you are wanting your dog to learn..and make habit.

I have a golden retreiver too and she also likes to give kisses and jump on strangers. It's just in their nature to do that and it's probably hard to change that. I have another dog who isn't a golden retreiver and she barks at strangers and it is REALLY annoying. I recommend that you don't train your dog to bark at strangers because it will get very annoying!

First of all, train your dog to bark when you bark. Then you bark at the strangers when they walk by or come to the door. Your dog will soon get the idea. I wouldn't let people see you do this though, unless you don't mind being called weird.

my uncle trianed his dog to bark one who didnt belong in their yard not to bark at everyone who walks by just the ones that come to the yard you have to be careful though and show this dog who is alright to be there and who isnt. Although to train a dog to do this takes time and effort on both your parts. The best thing to do is find a friend that can dress up in clothing that the dog doesnt recognize or really can smell thats a hard one. Then you have them go to the yard or maybe just the door wherever it is you want the dog to really notice. You then come up with a command that only you know what it means so the dog doesnt get confussed with others around and only listens to you. You go over and over agian wiuth this dog you can teach any dog new behaviors it dont matter what kind of dog it is really any dog can become a good gaurd dog if taught right and shown how I can explain in more detail although it would take a bit of your time here. Be sure to have treats or a reward for the good effort you dog takes with this though good luck to both of you as for me i thtihnk that you can teach this without obenience school.

Maybe you could get a second dog, one that's more of a watchdog. Terriers bark at anything, and they're pretty playful and might run your Golden ragged, leaving her too tired to jump on and smooch people.

Other than that, though, perhaps you could start inviting more dog-lovers over - we don't mind having dogs jump on us.

I think you should try to change your behaviour when any stranger comes so your dog thinks that if you don't know that person...she should stay away...maybe she'd bark too. Good luck!

Well the best you can do with a golden retriever is that every time yall pass by a stranger, get the dog mad. For example play rough with him. also in your house play rough with your dog. But not too rough!!! the dog might turn its back on you

If I were you i wouldn't train her to bark at strangers. I'm saying this because your dog wouldn't be welcome in public places and her voice could be seriosly damaged from too much use, and in the end you'll be asking us how to make her be quiet.

retrievers are natural people pleasers. they usually don't have a mean barking side to them. you could contact an obedience class

Go here for an awesome dog training program http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?8PW1

Since it is obvious that you do not have a clue about obedience training, your services should be for free. You cannot train even an adult dog for 8 hours a day. About the most that can be done at any one time is 10 - 20 minutes and that is with an adult dog and not a puppy. The attention span on this baby is extremely short and training session should be no more than 10 minutes and twice a day. Additionally, there isn t going to be much learned if you will only be training for 5 days. Obedience training is cumulative and is done over a much longer period of at least several weeks to several months.
What you can charge is determined by your experience, reputation, and accomplishments and in a case like this, should also include guaranteed expectations. Just working with dogs over several years, is not the experience that is necessary to be a dog trainer. There are too many people who are putting that title to their name and fleecing the public. Don t be one of them.
