Shoot... My birds LOVE to travel. Depending on how you are trying to get him there and why, try calling the airlines and get specifics on how to transport. I think there is a service called "Pet Express" by American Airlines if you are sahipping just a bird. If you are flying you and your bird somewhere, you need to call the facilitator of your transportation to make specail arangments. If you have a bird larger then a Conure, there is a good chance that the bird will be in the luggage compartment because the cage will be too big to be called carry-on.
I do know they need certified health documents from an board-certified avian veterinarian before they can even get on a plane, whether you are with them or not, and they cannot be any more then one week old.
Chickens, turkeys, doves and other poultry are a different matter, and are dealt with seperately. They have different requirements because they are a "food source". I have received but never sent- the shipping is outragious.

I have cockatiels and they HATE to travel. It may be best to not take them and just get a bird sitter but if it's necessary, make a travel cage with carpeting on the bottom, holes in the top, food and water, and a perch. Keep the bird in the cage covered and stay with your bird.

I raise birds and as a result found that birds can be sent via us mail. However, you would need to say that they are button quail. For whatever reason, shipping "livestock" is okay but not pets. If you can give me a day or tow I can get the name of a company that makes shipping boxes for live animals. Contact me at sittin.tight@yahoo.com. You can also ship through regular airlines but I think it's quite expensive.

Also, contact a local vet to get a statement that the bird is in good health and has no ailments.

Ask the airline if you can bring it in a bird cage.
