i have taken melatonin and had a great nights sleep, Is there any negative effects of taking melatonin on a regular basis. I also heard that it can cause nightmares why is that, how can increasing your malotonin levels effect your dreams.

Melatonin is good for sleep. But yes, I read somwhere that you shouldn't take it all the time, as there are some side effects,although I don't remember them being potentionally harmful. . You could use Benadryl once in a while, as that will also help you to sleep. It is never good to take medications all the time. There must be a reason why you can't sleep. Don't consume anything with caffeine or sugar after say 8 P.M. every night. And see if that doesn't help. Good luck

Melatonin is a natural substance your body creates. As we get older, we stop produsing as much. Nightmares are of little concern as Melatonin actually helps to delay or even prevent REM sleep, the period in which we dream. Side efects are usually limited to groggyness in the morning, but a good stiff coffee will clear that right up.

There's not a lot of documentation about melatonin, but the main thing you need to be considering is that it's long term effects haven't been studied. Almost all drugs have some type of documented side effect, to include nightmares, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Hope I've helped you .......have a good day.
